Interferometer Receivers Mounted on PARI Telescopes

Six years of design, engineering and computer programming were brought to a climax this week with the hoisting and mounting of two highly specialized receivers onto radio telescopes at the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI), in Transylvania County, N.C. Faculty and students at UNC Asheville and Furman University, and PARI staff, designed and constructed this new instrument for studying signals from space. The two custom-built receivers, each mounted on PARI’s 26-meter radio telescopes, will be linked using specialized, high-speed computers to create a complex piece of equipment called an interferometer.

UNC Asheville to Host Holiday Party for 108 Head Start Youngsters

UNC Asheville will host its annual Head Start Holiday Party from 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, in the Highsmith University Union, Alumni Hall, on the campus. Donated gifts are already wrapped and individually labeled for the 108 preschoolers in the Pisgah View and Barnardsville Head Start centers who are expected to attend.

UNC Asheville Sociologist to Speak on “The Modern Eye and the Quilt as Art Form”

Sociologist and writer Karin Peterson will deliver the final lecture in the Fall 2011 “Meet the Maker” series at UNC Asheville, titled “How the Ordinary Becomes Extraordinary: The Modern Eye and the Quilt as Art Form.” Peterson, associate professor of Sociology at UNC Asheville, will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, in Owen Hall room 302 on the campus.

Sunday Concert Features University Singers, University Chamber Symphony and Reuter Center Singers

An afternoon of choral and orchestral music is in store when UNC Asheville’s University Singers and University Chamber Symphony perform with the Reuter Center Singers from 4-6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, in UNC Asheville’s Lipinsky Auditorium. Admission to this concert is $5 at the door, and free to children and students with ID.

Radiohead Gets Jazz Treatment at UNC Asheville as Part of International Musical Collaboration

UNC Asheville’s Jazz Big Band will perform five pieces by Radiohead, and the Studio 18 Vocal Jazz Ensemble will sing a mix of jazz, pop, and Broadway tunes, in a joint concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, in Lipinsky Auditorium on the campus.

Theatre UNCA to Perform Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town”

Theatre UNCA will stage Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize-winning “Our Town,” with seven performances from October 20-29. This family-friendly 1938 drama uses the daily life of a mythical small New England town to present a vision of love and marriage, death and eternity. All productions by Theatre UNCA are open to the public.

Soumitra Lahiri to Perform Indian Classical Music at UNC Asheville

Award-winning sitar player Soumitra Lahiri and tabla player Samir Chatterjee will perform together in concert, 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, at UNC Asheville’s Lipinsky Auditorium. The concert offers a rare opportunity in Western North Carolina to hear top-level Indian musicians. The duo will perform Indian classical music blended with modern influences.

Varied and Busy Concert Season for UNC Asheville Music Department

UNC Asheville’s Music Department will present a varied program of concerts on the campus this fall by student musicians with faculty and other special guests. Six performances are scheduled in October, three in November, and the series will conclude with the annual Holiday Concert in December. Admission is $5 at the door for each performance, with students and children free.

“Well-a-Bration” Events Support Healthier Eating

Nutrition workshops, garden tours and cooking demonstrations in the Sherrill Center’s new teaching kitchen will all be part of “Well-a-Bration,” a week of activities showcasing UNC Asheville’s health and wellness programs. Well-a-Bration, which takes place Monday, Sept. 12, through Saturday, Sept. 17 at UNC Asheville, will also feature exercise programs, meetings of health policy leaders, health and sports expos, and a talk by Dr. Patch Adams, the well-known physician, clown, and advocate.
