UNC Asheville Hosts Talk by Exonerated Death Row Inmate Glen Edward Chapman

Glen Edward Chapman, an innocent man recently released from North Carolina’s death row, will speak at 12:15 p.m. Thursday, April 2, at UNC Asheville’s Humanities Lecture Hall. He will be joined by UNC Asheville Psychology Department Chair Pamela Laughon who served as a mitigation specialist on his case. The free talk is sponsored by UNC Asheville’s Psychology Department.
UNC Asheville's Center for Jewish Studies Hosts Concert by Acclaimed Jewish Musician Danny Maseng

UNC Asheville's Center for Jewish Studies will host a performance of "The Beauty, the Passion, the Heartbreak: Israel, 60 Years of Song" by celebrated Jewish singer Danny Maseng at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 29, at The Grey Eagle, 185 Clingman Ave., Asheville. This one-man show is the seventh annual Deutsch Family Concert. Tickets are $18 general admission and $12 for area students.
UNC Asheville Hosts Eighth Biennial Academic Conference on GLBTQ Studies March 26-28; Filmmaker John Cameron Mitchell and Poet Joan Larkin to Speak

UNC Asheville will host its eighth biennial Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (GLBTQ) Studies Conference on campus March 26-28, 2009. This year’s conference, "Queer Art/Queer Action (Politics of Possibility)," will focus on the interrelationships between artistic expression, political activism and academic inquiry.
The national academic conference will offer panels, workshops and papers by some 50 faculty and students from a host of universities, including University of California-Davis, University of Cincinnati, San Francisco State University, Indiana University-Bloomington, George Mason University, Georgia State University, University of Bristol (England), University of Alberta (Canada), University of South Australia, Tennessee State University, and UNC-Wilmington.
Center for Diversity Education Hosts Nationally Touring Photo Exhibit "Road to Freedom"; Portraits of People with Disabilities on Display, Other Events Planned

UNC Asheville's Center for Diversity Education has been joined by a number of community groups to bring the nationally touring photography exhibition "Road to Freedom: Portraits of People with Disabilities" to Asheville. The exhibit of photos and text panels features children, teens and adults with the full spectrum of physical, sensory, learning and mental disabilities. It is on loan from the Family Diversity Project, a non-profit organization based in Amherst, Mass. "Road to Freedom" will be on view March 15-April 17 in UNC Asheville's Karpen Hall Lobby.
UNC Asheville Celebrates Black History Month with a Variety of Programs

UNC Asheville will celebrate Black History Month throughout February with a host of special events. Among the highlights will be the opening of UNC Asheville's Intercultural Center, a Step Show featuring groups from across the Southeast and film screenings.
UNC Asheville to Host Community Reception with MLK Prayer Breakfast Keynote Speaker

UNC Asheville will host a community reception with Bernard LaFayette, keynote speaker for the 28th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast. The reception will be held 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at UNC Asheville's Reuter Center. The event immediately follows the breakfast, which will be held at 8:30 a.m. at the Grove Park Inn. The reception is co-sponsored by UNC Asheville's Office of Retiree Services and the Asheville-Buncombe County Martin Luther King Jr. Association. The event is free and open to the public.
