UNC Asheville will host a panel discussion on “Celebrating Advocacy: Asheville YWCA Working to Empower Women and Eliminate Racism” at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 17, in UNC Asheville’s Laurel Forum, Karpen Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

UNC Asheville to Host Evening with Acclaimed Civil Rights Leader, Songstress Bernice Johnson Reagon

UNC Asheville will host an evening with acclaimed Civil Rights leader and songstress Bernice Johnson Reagon at 7 p.m. Friday, March 19, in UNC Asheville's Lipinsky Auditorium. Reagon, who has been selected to give the May 2010 UNC Asheville Commencement Address, will engage the audience in her signature "song-talk" style. The event is free and open to the public; American Sign Language interpretation will be provided.

UNC Asheville Hosts Screening of "The Greatest Silence: Rape in the Congo" with Actress Andie MacDowell

WILL BE HELD AS SCHEDULED -- UNC Asheville will host a screening of the Emmy-Award nominated documentary "The Greatest Silence: Rape in the Congo" followed by a discussion with acclaimed actress Andie MacDowell at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, in UNC Asheville's Lipinsky Auditorium. The event is open to the public; donations will be accepted at the door to benefit OurVoice and Helpmate.

UNC Asheville to Host Reading by Affrilachian Poet Frank X Walker

UNC Asheville will host a reading by Affrilachian poet Frank X Walker at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, in UNC Asheville’s Humanities Lecture Hall. “Affrilachian,” a term coined by Walker, refers to an African-American who lives in Appalachia, and challenges the idea of a homogeneous all-white landscape in the Appalachian region.

Esperanza Spalding Jazz Ensemble to Perform at UNC Asheville

CANCELED DUE TO WEATHER -- Child prodigy turned professional musician Esperanza Spalding will perform with her jazz ensemble at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 2, at UNC Asheville’s Lipinsky Auditorium. Spalding, 25, is a composer, bassist, multi-lingual vocalist who has been called “the future of jazz and instrumental music.”

UNC Asheville’s Center for Jewish Studies Hosts Talk on “What Kind of Jew Was Jesus?”

UNC Asheville’s Center for Jewish Studies will host a talk on “What Kind of Jew was Jesus? How Texts and Archeology Tell Us a New Story,” by noted religious scholar James Tabor, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, at the UNC Asheville Reuter Center. The event is free and open to the public.

UNC Asheville Hosts Historical Photo Exhibition of Asheville's East End

“Asheville’s East End Circa 1968,” a photography exhibition by Asheville artist Andrea Clark, is on view through February 26 in UNC Asheville’s Blowers Gallery. The exhibition includes 26 framed black-and-white photographs and a large historical map of Asheville. A reception will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, in the gallery, with a talk by the artist at 5 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Martin Luther King Association Joins with UNC Asheville for Annual Youth Program

The Martin Luther King Jr. Association will kick off the the 2010 King holiday with its annual youth awards. The event will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14, at UNC Asheville's Lipinsky Auditorium. This year 27 outstanding youth were nominated by peers, teachers, pastors, and community leaders to receive the Martin Luther King Youth Award.
