UNC Asheville Celebrates Black History Month

UNC Asheville will celebrate Black History Month throughout February with a series of events including film screenings, lectures and a step show.

Award-winning journalist Alex Kotlowitz to screen new documentary, speak on race and poverty, February 21 at UNC Asheville

Best-selling author and award-winning journalist Alex Kotlowitz will speak about race, poverty and human rights in two daytime talks, and screen his new documentary film, "The Interrupters," at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21 at UNC Asheville.

Jay Michaelson, author of “God vs. Gay? The Religious Case for Equality,” to make two appearances at UNC Asheville

Jay Michaelson, an award-winning journalist, a poet, activist, and scholar on the intersections of religion, spirituality, sexuality and law, will make two public appearances at UNC Asheville – a reading of poetry and prose at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, in Karpen Hall's Laurel Forum, and a lecture at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28 at the Sherrill Center, Mountain View Room. Both events are free and open to the public.

New exhibit of photos of Uganda’s Bakonzo people to open at UNC Asheville

An exhibition of photos by Carrie Wagner of Uganda's Bakonzo people will open with a reception from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, at Blowers Gallery in UNC Asheville's Ramsey Library. RECEPTION RESCHEDULED: 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24.

Gwendolyn Boyd, Asheville Middle School Orators, and “The Parchman Hour” to Highlight Martin Luther King Jr. Week at UNC Asheville

A presentation of "The Parchman Hour" and a keynote talk by Gwendolyn Boyd, longtime activist for women's equality and recruitment of African Americans into science and engineering, will highlight Martin Luther King Jr. Week at UNC Asheville. The week will also include opportunities for student participation in a day of service during the Martin Luther King Jr. national holiday, and transportation for students to other area events celebrating King's life and legacy.

Richard Chess and Katherine Min of UNC Asheville Literature Faculty Win Prestigious Awards

Richard Chess and Katherine Min of UNC Asheville's literature faculty were both awarded prestigious honors this fall semester. Chess was named Western Region Distinguished Poet by the North Carolina Poetry Society and its Gilbert-Chappell Distinguished Poet Series. Min was named the winner of the Sherwood Anderson Foundation Fiction Award.

Reuter Center Singers Holiday Concert Set for December 10

The Reuter Center Singers, more than 50 voices strong, present their annual holiday concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10, in UNC Asheville's Reuter Center. The concert is free and open to the public.

UNC Asheville Hosts Special Events for Native American Heritage Month

UNC Asheville will celebrate Native American Heritage Month with a series of special events including a panel discussion, storytelling performance, and presentations of Cherokee language, ceremonies, pottery, ceremonies and rituals.

Climbing PoeTree to Perform November 13

Climbing PoeTree – the duo of spoken word artists Alixa Garcia and Naima Penniman – will perform at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13 at UNC Asheville's Lipinsky Auditorium.

Women’s Rights Activist Selma James to Speak at UNC Asheville

Selma James, founder of the International Wages for Housework Campaign, will speak at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8 in UNC Asheville's Karpen Hall, Room 243. The event is free and open to the public.
