“Aging with Awareness” – Rabbi Sheila Weinberg to Speak at UNC Asheville

Rabbi Sheila Weinberg, co-founder of the Institute for Jewish Spirituality, will present a talk, "Aging with Awareness," at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, at UNC Asheville's Reuter Center. Weinberg's talk is sponsored by the university's Center for Jewish Studies and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UNC Asheville. This event is free and open to the public.

April 18th Lecture to Examine Religion, Race and Boxing in the New South

Arthur Remillard, a scholar of religion in the American South and its connections with sports, will deliver UNC Asheville's annual Sam Hill Lecture in Southern Religion. Remillard's talk, "Jack Johnson, We Have Waited So Long for You – Religion, Race and Boxing in the New South," takes place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 18 in the Sherrill Center, Mountain View Room.

Cherokee Principal Chief Michell Hicks to Speak at UNC Asheville

Principal Chief Michell Hicks of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians will present a talk, "Cherokee Sovereignty: Issues & Institutions," at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 11 in UNC Asheville's Highsmith University Union, Alumni Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Queer Studies Conference Set for April 4-6 at UNC Asheville

The 2013 UNC Asheville Queer Studies Conference will take place April 4-6 in various locations on campus. This biennial conference is a gathering of academics, artists and activists, including participants from around the country and abroad, addressing issues of gender, sexuality, diversity, human and civil rights.

Panel to discuss “Boundaries: Art and its Relationship to Systems of Oppression”

Local artists Jeremy Russell and Valeria Watson-Doost, creators of the "Whole Earth Theory" exhibition at UNC Asheville's Highsmith University Union Gallery, will be joined by members of UNC Asheville's faculty for a panel discussion, "Boundaries," on the nexus of art and politics at 6 p.m. Monday, March 25 at the Highsmith University Union Grotto on campus.

“Women in Music” – Panel to feature Asheville performers, teachers, radio host

A panel of area musicians, teachers and others will provide an update on women's experiences in the music business. "Women in Music," part of UNC Asheville's observance of Women's History Month, is co-sponsored by the university's Department of Music and the Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies program. The event takes place at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 21 in the Highsmith University Union Grotto on campus.

Local artists Jeremy Russell and Valeria Watson-Doost will open their new collaborative exhibit, "Whole Earth Theory: Dimensions of Life and Death" with a reception at 6 p.m. Friday, March 1, in UNC Asheville's Highsmith University Union Gallery.

James Loewen, author of the groundbreaking best-seller, "Lies My Teacher Told Me," will speak at 7 p.m. Friday, March 1, at UNC Asheville's Robinson Hall, Room 125. This event is free and open to the public.

UNC Asheville Hosts “Speak-Out” on Sexual Harassment

UNC Asheville will host a sexual harassment "speak-out" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, in the Laurel Forum in Karpen Hall. The speak-out will bring voice to diverse experiences of sexual harassment, and provide information about preventing and defending oneself against sexual harassment. The event is free and open to the public.

“Parallel Journeys: WW II and the Holocaust” brings experiences of teens to light

UNC Asheville's Center for Diversity Education presents a new exhibit for the month of March, "Parallel Journeys: WW II and the Holocaust," telling the stories of dozens of teens and young adults who were witnesses, participants and victims. The exhibit is free and open to the public from March 4-29 in UNC Asheville's Karpen Hall.
