Author of Exposé on Lehman Brothers to Speak at UNC Asheville

Lawrence G. McDonald, former Vice President of Distressed Debt and Convertible Securities at Lehman Brothers will speak at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 27, at UNC Asheville’s Humanities Lecture Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

UNC Asheville’s Center for Diversity Education Presents Performances, Discussions about Race

In mid-October, UNC Asheville's Center for Diversity Education will present a series of events about past and present race relations. Duke University historian and author Tim Tyson and civil rights attorney James Ferguson will lead discussions of contemporary racial issues. Actor Mike Wiley will stage one-man shows at UNC Asheville and the Diana Wortham Theatre.

UNC Asheville Holds Career and Graduate School Fair

Some 60 organizations are scheduled to participate in UNC Asheville’s 2010 Career and Graduate School Fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, in UNC Asheville’s Highsmith University Union. Community members and UNC Asheville alumni are invited to join students to learn more about full-time and part-time jobs, internships and graduate school opportunities.

Sierra Club’s New Executive Director to Speak at UNC Asheville October 21

Michael Brune, executive director of the Sierra Club, will discuss global environmental challenges at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, at UNC Asheville's Humanities Lecture Hall. Joining Brune will be Tom Peterson, from the NOAA's National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, who will give an introductory talk on climate change.

UNC Asheville’s NEMAC and RENCI, RiverLink, and the Swannanoa Flood Risk Management Project to Co-Sponsor Free Bus Tour to Examine Flood Damage Reduction Projects

UNC Asheville’s National Environmental Modeling and Analysis Center (NEMAC) and Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI), in partnership with RiverLink and the Swannanoa Flood Risk Management Project, are co-sponsoring a free bus tour of the Biltmore area – including Lake Craig, the Biltmore Avenue Bridge, and a walking tour of Biltmore Village, one of the areas affected by the 2004 floods – at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 7.

Defense lawyer for detainees and international law expert to discuss Guantanamo dilemmas

UNC Asheville’s N.C. Center for Creative Retirement presents, “Guantanamo: The Law, the Dilemma, and the Options,” a discussion by two distinguished experts, including one with first-hand knowledge of the Guantanamo legal proceedings, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, in the Manheimer Room at UNC Ashville’s Reuter Center.

National Environmental Modeling and Analysis Center (NEMAC) Launches Redesigned Website

UNC Asheville’s National Environmental Modeling and Analysis Center (NEMAC) has a new Drupal-based website, at http://nemac.unca.edu, launched on October 6. The dramatically redesigned site, created by the center’s in-house digital team, embodies the center’s forward-thinking vision and aligns with UNC Asheville’s newly designed website, launched earlier this year. “Visitors to our new site will quickly learn who we are, and about the work we are doing locally, regionally, and statewide,” said Bridget O’Hara, NEMAC’s science delivery specialist.

UNC Asheville Continues Writers at Home Series October 17

UNC Asheville's 2010-2011 Writers at Home series continues with readings by local authors Justin Bigos and Lucy Tobin at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, at Malaprop's Bookstore/Café, 55 Haywood St., downtown Asheville. The event is free and open to the public. Both Bigos and Tobin are instructors for the Great Smokies Writing Program.

UNC Asheville Offers Distance Learning Courses for Lateral Entry Teachers

Registration is open at UNC Asheville for a distance learning course for working teachers seeking lateral entry licensure. Teleconference sites include UNC Asheville and Blue Ridge Community College. Other sites can be arranged for five or more participants.

Re-Viewing Black Mountain College2: Second Annual International Conference October 8-10

The Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center and UNC Asheville are pleased to present Re-Viewing Black Mountain College2, an international conference that explores the history and rich legacy of the innovative Black Mountain College. The October 8-10 conference includes includes more than 45 panels, performance, poetry and film. Internationally known sculptor Kenneth Snelson will give the keynote address.
