UNC Asheville Celebrates Homecoming February 23-26

UNC Asheville will hold its Homecoming 2011 celebration from February 23-26. Special events range from the annual homecoming parade and basketball games to a step show and tailgate party. A number of activities are open to the public.

Photography and Bookmaking Workshops Offered at North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement

Registration is now open for two spring workshops at UNC Asheville's North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement. The hands-on courses, which are open to students of all ages and skills, include lessons in digital photography and bookmaking.

RENCI at UNC Asheville Hosts Swannanoa Flood Risk Management Project Public Open House on February 24

The Swannanoa Flood Risk Management Project invites the public to attend a drop-in open house to be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb, 24, at the Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI) at UNC Asheville Engagement Site, located in the Grove Arcade in downtown Asheville. The event is free and open to the public.

Tight Finances Force UNC Asheville to Suspend Concerts on the Quad Summer Music Series

Because of financial pressure and the likelihood of further budget cuts, UNC Asheville today announced that it will cancel the 2011 Concerts on the Quad summer music series.

Registration Now Open for College for Seniors Spring Term

UNC Asheville's nationally renowned College for Seniors has opened registration for spring term courses, held March 21-May 13. Course catalogues were mailed today and course listings are available online. Classes will take place at UNC Asheville's Reuter Center, home of the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement.

"Uneven Fairways" Examines the Story of African-American Golfers during Segregation

“Uneven Fairways,” a documentary film hosted by Samuel L. Jackson that examines the stories and struggles of African-American professional golfers during segregation, will be screened at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, in UNC Asheville's Humanities Lecture Hall.

WNC Men’s Leadership Conference to Enlist College Men in Preventing Gender-based Violence

Male students from area college campuses will gather to develop leadership in preventing gender based violence, in a special conference at UNC Asheville's Highsmith University Union from 5-9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22. The Western North Carolina Men’s Leadership Conference, co-sponsored by UNC Asheville and Our VOICE, Buncombe County’s sexual assault crisis and prevention center, is expected to draw participants from Warren Wilson College, Montreat College, Mars Hill College and Western Carolina University.

SAT Prep Course Offered at UNC Asheville

Registration is now open for the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) prep classes offered by UNC Asheville. Classes will meet for three consecutive weeks from 6-8:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, from February 21-March 9 on the UNC Asheville campus.

Writers at Home Continues with Readings by Master of Liberal Arts Students

Members of UNC Asheville's Master of Liberal Arts program will present their creative writing works in the next installment of UNC Asheville's Writers at Home series. Authors include Nathan Cook, Jordan Dolfi and Carolyn Ogburn. The reading begins at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 20, at Malaprop's Bookstore/Café, 55 Haywood St., downtown Asheville. It is free and open to the public

Summer Camp and Community Service Fairs Offer Job and Volunteer Opportunities

Summer job opportunities and opportunities for community service volunteer positions will be the focus of the 2011 Summer Camp Fair and Community Service Fair, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, at UNC Asheville’s Highsmith University Union. These companion events are free and open to all members of the community as well as UNC Asheville students.
