UNC Asheville Holds 39th Annual Spring Wildflower and Bird Pilgrimage

UNC Asheville's Biology Department will celebrate Appalachian nature with its 39th annual Spring Wildflower and Bird Pilgrimage April 29-May 1. Sixteen special events, including talks and guided tours, will focus on local flora and fauna. All are open to the public.

The North Asheville Tailgate Market, a Saturday morning tradition for those who love fresh produce, herbs and flowers, will reopen for its 31st season on Saturday, April 16, on the UNC Asheville campus. The market is open from 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays and offers plenty of convenient parking.
UNC Asheville Hosts 27th Annual Economic Crystal Ball Seminar

UNC Asheville's 27th annual Economic Crystal Ball Seminar will be held on Thursday, April 21, at UNC Asheville's Lipinsky Auditorium. Noted economists David W. Berson and James F. Smith will make forecasts on the 2011 business and financial outlook. The seminar, sponsored by the UNC Asheville Economics Department and Parsec Financial, begins with a 6:15 p.m. reception, followed by the speakers at 7 p.m., and a question-and-answer period at 8 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
Second Home Development Symposium Addresses Changing Landscape of WNC

The Asheville Graduate Center will host the Second Home Development Symposium from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 14, at UNC Asheville's Reuter Center. The program is designed for planners, policy-makers, realtors, developers, bankers, academics, community leaders, non-profit organizations and citizens interested in the policies and issues surrounding second home development. Cost for the daylong event, which will include a panel discussion and small-group sessions, is $25.

"Greensboro Four" Civil Rights Pioneer Franklin McCain to Speak at UNC Asheville

Franklin McCain, one of the original four African-American students to sit in at the white-only Woolworth lunch counter in Greensboro, N.C., will speak at UNC Asheville at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, at Humanities Lecture Hall. McCain's talk will be preceded at 6 p.m. by the screening of "Seizing Justice: The Greensboro 4," a documentary produced by the Smithsonian Institution. The events are sponsored by the UNC Asheville Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), and are free and open to the public.
Viver Brasil Brings Afro-Brazilian Dance to Asheville

Asheville will experience jubilant Afro-Brazilian dance when the vibrant and award-winning Viver Brasil takes to the stage at the Diana Wortham Theater on April 5 and 6. Specializing in bringing to life the beautiful and complex stories of the “orixa,” African sacred energies, Viver Brasil’s style incorporates samba, contemporary Afro-Brazilian dance and carnival. Curtain is 8 p.m. for both shows at the Diana Wortham Theater, at Pack Place in downtown Asheville.
