“Come Together and Create” – Martin Luther King Jr. Week Brings Campus and Community Together for Celebration of the Arts

UNC Asheville will host “Come Together and Create,” a two-day showcase and celebration of local performing artists, Friday and Saturday, Jan. 20 and 21. These performances, part of the university’s Martin Luther King Jr. Week, will take place in the Carol Belk Theatre on the campus.
UNC Asheville Hosts Second Annual Health Fair at Kimmel Arena

UNC Asheville will host its second annual Health Fair with exhibits from some 40 local health organizations and businesses, from 11 a.m-2 p.m. Thursday, January 12, on the Kimmel Arena concourse. The fair is free and open to the public, with free parking available in the Kimmel Arena parking deck.
January “Writers at Home” Features Prose Readings by Diverse Authors

Published writers from diverse professional backgrounds will read their works in the next installment of “Writers at Home,” the monthly series from UNC Asheville’s Great Smokies Writing Program. The writers are all part of the program’s invitation-only prose master class. Elizabeth Lutyens, who teaches the master class, will host the reading, beginning at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, at Malaprop's Bookstore/Café, 55 Haywood St., downtown Asheville. It is free and open to the public.

(or are you still pretending it doesn’t exist?),” a presentation by damali ayo, will highlight a series of events at UNC Asheville to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Week. Her talk begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012 in UNC Asheville’s Lipinsky Auditorium and is free and open to the public.
N.C. Center for Creative Retirement at UNC Asheville to Receive $2 Million Endowment from the Bernard Osher Foundation of San Francisco

UNC Asheville's North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement (NCCCR) will be awarded a $2 million endowment from the Bernard Osher Foundation, with the first half of the endowment expected to be awarded in summer 2012, according to Catherine Frank, NCCCR executive director. This follows a $100,000 grant award from the foundation in June, 2011.
Interferometer Receivers Mounted on PARI Telescopes

Six years of design, engineering and computer programming were brought to a climax this week with the hoisting and mounting of two highly specialized receivers onto radio telescopes at the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI), in Transylvania County, N.C. Faculty and students at UNC Asheville and Furman University, and PARI staff, designed and constructed this new instrument for studying signals from space. The two custom-built receivers, each mounted on PARI’s 26-meter radio telescopes, will be linked using specialized, high-speed computers to create a complex piece of equipment called an interferometer.
UNC Asheville Foundation and TD Bank Agree to Sale/Purchase of Former Health Adventure Property; Transfer will be Combined Sale and Gift

The UNC Asheville Foundation and TD Bank have signed a contract for the sale of land adjacent to the university that was formerly owned by the Health Adventure. The 8.9-acre property is located at the intersection of Broadway and Catawba streets.

UNC Asheville to Host Holiday Party for 108 Head Start Youngsters

UNC Asheville will host its annual Head Start Holiday Party from 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, in the Highsmith University Union, Alumni Hall, on the campus. Donated gifts are already wrapped and individually labeled for the 108 preschoolers in the Pisgah View and Barnardsville Head Start centers who are expected to attend.
