“Writers at Home” Highlights Great Smokies Review Authors

Cathy Vance Agrella, Terry Gess and LJ Faulkner will read from their works in the next installment of Writers at Home, from UNC Asheville's Great Smokies Writing Program (GSWP). All three are contributors to The Great Smokies Review, GSWP's online literary journal. The reading is free and open to the public, and begins at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21, at Malaprop's Bookstore/Café, 55 Haywood St., in downtown Asheville.

Mystery Writer John Hart, Winner of Consecutive Edgar Awards, to Read at UNC Asheville

John Hart, author of bestselling and critically acclaimed mystery novels, will read from and discuss his books at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, in UNC Asheville's Sherrill Center, Mountain View Room. Hart is the only writer to win two consecutive Edgar Awards for Best Novel. The Edgars are awarded by the Mystery Writers of America.

Theatre UNCA to Perform Lois Lowry’s “The Giver”

Theatre UNCA, UNC Asheville's Department of Drama mainstage season, presents "The Giver," Lois Lowry's Newberry Medal-winning book, adapted for the stage by Eric Coble, September 27-30 at the Carol Belk Theatre on the campus.

Koplos and Metcalf to Speak on History of Studio Craft

Janet Koplos and Bruce Metcalf, authors of "Makers: A History of American Studio Craft" (University of North Carolina Press, 2010), will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9 in the UNC Asheville Reuter Center, home of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. A book-signing will follow.

Asheville Writers to Read, Honor, 88-Year-Old Memoirist

Seven well-known Asheville authors will perform a reading of the work of 88-year-old Virginia Redfield, whose first book, the memoir "Night Bloom," was published in April with the help of Asheville's literary community.

Writers at Home Fall Series Begins with Poets Iglesias, Matthews and Soniat

The 2012 Writers at Home fall series, sponsored by UNC Asheville's Great Smokies Writing Program (GSWP), begins with readings by distinguished poets Holly Iglesias, Sebastian Matthews and Katherine Soniat. The readings take place at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, at Malaprop's Bookstore/Café, 55 Haywood St., downtown Asheville. Writers at Home events are free and open to the public.

UNC Asheville's second annual Well-A-Bration, September 13-15, will feature music, a sports expo, healthy cooking and exercise workshops, and a keynote talk by author, activist and sex-advice columnist Dan Savage.

UNC Asheville’s Great Smokies Writing Program Announces Fall Workshops

UNC Asheville's Great Smokies Writing Program (GSWP) has announced its fall lineup of workshops for local writers in poetry and prose. Classes will be held in Asheville, Black Mountain, Burnsville and Hendersonville.

Renowned Sculptural Ceramicist Magdalene Odundo to Speak in Asheville

Magdalene Odundo, the renowned Kenyan-born sculptural ceramist and professor, will speak about her work at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, at the Asheville Art Museum. Her talk is presented in partnership with UNC Asheville's Center for Craft, Creativity & Design (CCCD), which has sponsored Odundo's visit as artist-in-residence in Western North Carolina.

New Exhibit to Feature Works by UNC Asheville Studio Art Faculty

Works by 10 UNC Asheville Art Department faculty members will be featured in a wide-ranging exhibition Aug. 24-Sept. 14 at UNC Asheville's S. Tucker Cooke Gallery. The show kicks off the gallery's 2012-2013 season. An opening reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24, in the gallery.
