Martha Connell to Speak at UNC Asheville's Craft Campus Lecture Series

UNC Asheville's Craft Campus will wrap up its year-long lecture series, "Meet the Maker: Conversations of Meaning with Craftspeople," with a talk by noted gallery director Martha Connell. She will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 2, in UNC Asheville's Owen Conference Center. The event is free and open to the public.
UNC Asheville's Center for Jewish Studies Hosts Concert by Acclaimed Jewish Musician Danny Maseng

UNC Asheville's Center for Jewish Studies will host a performance of "The Beauty, the Passion, the Heartbreak: Israel, 60 Years of Song" by celebrated Jewish singer Danny Maseng at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 29, at The Grey Eagle, 185 Clingman Ave., Asheville. This one-man show is the seventh annual Deutsch Family Concert. Tickets are $18 general admission and $12 for area students.
UNC Asheville Hosts Eighth Biennial Academic Conference on GLBTQ Studies March 26-28; Filmmaker John Cameron Mitchell and Poet Joan Larkin to Speak

UNC Asheville will host its eighth biennial Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (GLBTQ) Studies Conference on campus March 26-28, 2009. This year’s conference, "Queer Art/Queer Action (Politics of Possibility)," will focus on the interrelationships between artistic expression, political activism and academic inquiry.
The national academic conference will offer panels, workshops and papers by some 50 faculty and students from a host of universities, including University of California-Davis, University of Cincinnati, San Francisco State University, Indiana University-Bloomington, George Mason University, Georgia State University, University of Bristol (England), University of Alberta (Canada), University of South Australia, Tennessee State University, and UNC-Wilmington.
Renowned Jazz Pianist Vijay Iyer to Play Free Memorial Concert at UNC Asheville

World-class composer and jazz pianist Vijay Iyer, voted the #1 Rising Star Jazz Artist and #1 Rising Star Composer in the Downbeat Magazine International Critics' Poll for both 2006 and 2007, will play a free concert on Saturday, April 4 in honor of Dan Lucas, a UNC Asheville alumnus who died a year ago while earning an advanced degree at the University of California at Berkeley. Lucas, a first-year candidate for a doctorate in Chemistry, was also a talented musician and jazz enthusiast. The performance is made possible by the Dan Lucas Memorial Fund, an endowment of the Western North Carolina Community Foundation. The Community Foundation's mission is to develop and distribute charitable funds across eighteen counties in the mountain region. This April's concert is the first in a planned annual series.
TheatreUNCA to Stage Chekhov Plays "The Bear" and "The Proposal"

TheatreUNCA will stage two short one-act Anton Chekhov comedies, "The Bear" and "The Proposal," from February 25 to March 1 at UNC Asheville's Carol Belk Theatre. Curtain is 8 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday with a 2 p.m. Sunday matinee. Each play will run approximately 30 minutes. All shows are open to the public.
Local Fiber Artist Jen Swearington to Speak at UNC Asheville's Craft Campus Lecture Series

She will speak at 12:30 p.m. in Owen Hall, room 237, and at 7 p.m. in Laurel Forum, Karpen Hall. Both events are free and open to the public.

UNC Asheville Holds Retrospective Exhibition of Local Sculptor, Former Professor Dan Millspaugh

UNC Asheville will hold a retrospective exhibition of works by noted Asheville sculptor and former professor Dan Millspaugh from January 30 to February 25 in UNC Asheville's S. Tucker Cooke Gallery. An opening reception will be held 6-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, in the gallery. Millspaugh will give a gallery talk at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, in the gallery. Events are free and open to the public.
