UNC Asheville Hosts Exhibit by Noted Painter Philip Jackson

"Still Life as Theater," an exhibition of some 30 paintings, drawings and photographs by noted artist Philip Jackson, will be on view at UNC Asheville's Highsmith University Union Gallery through February 2. UNC Asheville's Art Department and Craft Studies will co-host the inaugural National Juried Drawing Exhibition January 12-February 2 at the S. Tucker Cooke Gallery, located on the first floor of UNC Asheville's Owen Hall. TheatreUNCA will stage the Michael Slade drama "And a Child Shall Lead" November 18-22 at UNC Asheville's Carol Belk Theatre. Curtain is 8 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday with a 2 p.m. Sunday matinee. All shows are open to the public.
UNC Asheville's Center for Jewish Studies Hosts One-Man Play "A Jerusalem Between Us"

UNC Asheville's Center for Jewish Studies will host "A Jerusalem Between Us," a one-man play written and performed by Aaron Davidman, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at UNC Asheville's Lipinsky Auditorium. The performance is held in conjunction with the Visualizing Human Rights Anti-Conference. The event is free and open to the public.
UNC Asheville Professor, Painter Virginia Derryberry to Hold Solo Exhibition at Flood Fine Art Center Gallery

Virginia Derryberry, a noted painter and UNC Asheville art professor, will hold a solo exhibition of recent work at the Flood Fine Art Center Gallery, 109 Roberts St., in the Asheville River Arts District from November 13 to December 5. The exhibition, entitled "Eide/Eidola," features 15 large-scale paintings from her Rebis series. It is Derryberry's first solo exhibition in Asheville since 2000. An opening reception will be held 7-10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, in the gallery, which is located on the second floor of the Phil Mechanic Building. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

Students in UNC Asheville's Multimedia Arts and Sciences video art class will present their newest work at a special exhibit of multimedia video installations, "The Electric Rabbit Hole," on Monday, Nov. 9, in Highsmith Student Union, Alumni Hall.
Violinist Daniel Bernard Roumain to Perform at UNC Asheville; "etudes4violin&electronix" Fuses Funk, Rock, Hip-Hop and Classical Music

Funk, rock, hip-hop and classical music might not seem like natural partners, but violinist and composer Daniel Bernard Roumain (known as DBR) has found a way to blend them into a compelling and distinctive form. This eclectic, high-energy style, which he calls "dred violin," will be the highlight of an upcoming performance at UNC Asheville. DBR will perform his original "etudes4violin&electronix" at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at UNC Asheville's Lipinsky Auditorium. He will be joined on stage by Wynne Bennett on keyboards, computer and piano and Elan Vytal (aka DJ Scientific) on turntables and beat-boxing. It is DBR's first performance in Western North Carolina.
UNC Asheville Craft Campus Hosts "Meet the Maker" Lecture Series

UNC Asheville’s Craft Campus will launch its year-long lecture series, “Meet the Maker: Conversations of Meaning with Craftspeople,” this month. This fall series of events will focus on discussions with craftspeople in various media, including jewelry, blacksmithing, sculpture, glass making and painting. The series will also include screenings of the PBS series “Craft in America.”
UNC Asheville Hosts Talk by Noted GLBTQ Scholar Jonathan D. Katz; Lecture Examines "Art, Eros and the Sixties"

UNC Asheville’s annual Arts and Ideas Lecture will feature a talk by Jonathan D. Katz on “Art, Eros and the Sixties” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, at UNC Asheville’s Owen Conference Room. The lecture is based on his forthcoming book of the same name, which discusses social liberation and the collective capacity of art to free the mind through a return to the body. The noted GLBTQ scholar will examine how a diverse group of artists, from Andy Warhol to Yoko Ono, were driven by this concept to create the first international movement in contemporary art. The event is free and open to the public.
UNC Asheville Hosts Talk by Noted Author Peter Turchi

UNC Asheville will host a talk by Peter Turchi, former director of the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College. Turchi will discuss “If You Lived Here, You’d be Home By Now: Reflections on Perceptions of Place” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, at UNC Asheville’s Laurel Forum, Karpen Hall. This event is free and open to the public.
