UNC Asheville senior holds art exhibit

"Neither here nor there," an exhibition of paintings, drawing transfers and a sound installation by UNC Asheville senior Giedre Krulikas, will be on view from November 12-23 in UNC Asheville's S. Tucker Cooke Gallery, located on the main floor of Owen Hall.
UNC Asheville Dance Program Hosts Benefit Performance, "Everybody Can-Can"

UNC Asheville's Dance Program will hold its 13th annual benefit performance "Everybody Can-Can" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, in UNC Asheville's Lipinsky Auditorium. Admission is $5 or four cans of food at the door. All canned goods will be donated to Manna Food Bank and cash proceeds will benefit UNC Asheville's Dance Program.
Math meets poetry in "Oulipo" conference at UNC Asheville

On November 19 and 20, UNC Asheville will host a conference of poets and mathematicians celebrating "Oulipo," a literary movement founded in France 50 years ago this month. "Oulipo is mathematics and poetry in their most intimate interaction," says Patrick Bahls, associate professor mathematics at UNC Asheville one of the conference organizers. The term Oulipo is also used to describe forms of constrained and experimental poetry often involving the use of mathematics.

"Lilliputia," an exhibition of 12 photographs by UNC Asheville senior Brandon Phillips, will be on view in UNC Asheville's Highsmith University Union Gallery from October 29 – November 9. Phillips' exhibit explores the nature of the human image by presenting a doll as "human." The show is a culmination of Phillips' work toward a bachelor's degree at UNC Asheville. There is an opening reception at 6 p.m. on October 29. The event is free and open to the public.
Distinguished visiting lecturer offers "Hokum: A History of Black Popular Culture"

Sheila Jordan brings unique jazz vocal stylings to UNC Asheville

Sheila Jordan, who has been singing for 75 years and is still winning awards, will bring her unique jazz vocal stylings to UNC Asheville for an 8 p.m. performance on Friday, Nov. 5 in Lipinsky Auditorium. She will also lead master classes open to musicians and listeners.
UNC Asheville’s Blowers Gallery Hosts Exhibition by Asheville Artist Robbie Lipe

UNC Asheville's Blowers Gallery will exhibit 10 mixed media works by Robbie Lipe during the month of November. An opening reception will be held from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, in the Blowers Gallery on the main floor of the Ramsey Library at UNC Asheville. The show, "Archaea: Secret Life in Yellowstone & Beyond," examines single-celled organism groups called archaea, which were among some of the earliest life forms on Earth and still exist today. Archaea can thrive in extreme habitats, such as the hot springs located in Yellowstone National Park, where they were first discovered.
"Meet the Maker" Lecture Series Continues with Ceramicist Arnie Zimmerman

UNC Asheville's Craft Studies Initiative will continue its "Meet the Maker: Conversations of Meaning with Craftspeople" lecture series with a special talk by acclaimed ceramicist Arnie Zimmerman. He will discuss his work at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, in UNC Asheville's Owen Hall, room 302. The New York-based sculptor is considered one of the most significant contemporary artists working in ceramics today. The event is free and open to the public.
Theatre UNCA Stages Series of Tennessee Williams' Short Plays

Theatre UNCA continues its series of Tennessee Williams' one-act plays with "27 Wagons Full of Cotton," "Auto Da Fe" and "This Property is Condemned" from October 21-23. These performances are the second of a series of Williams' one-act plays to be staged throughout the fall semester. Performances will take place at UNC Asheville’s Carol Belk Theater. UNC Asheville’s Music Department Continues Fall Concert Season;

UNC Asheville's Music Department will continue its fall concert season with eight performances in October and November, including a special program of holiday music. The concerts, which will be held on campus, feature student and guest musicians. Admission for each concert is $5 at the door, and free for students with ID.
