Kaizen Jazz Trio Kicks off UNC Asheville’s Music Department Spring Concert Series

UNC Asheville's Music Department will kick off its spring semester concert series with three performances in January and February at Lipinsky Auditorium, including a free mid-day concert by the local jazz band, Kaizen.

Ukulele Star Jake Shimabukuro to Perform at UNC Asheville

Jake Shimabukuro, who takes the ukulele beyond its traditional reach by playing jazz, blues, funk, classical, bluegrass, folk, flamenco and rock, will bring his unique uke music to UNC Asheville at 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, in Lipinsky Auditorium.

UNC Asheville's National Juried Drawing Exhibition Opens January 14

UNC Asheville's Art Department will open "Drawing Discourse," the university's second annual national juried drawing exhibition, with a lecture by juror Alex Kanevsky at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14, at Humanities Lecture Hall on the campus. An opening reception and awards presentation will follow from 6-8 p.m. in the S. Tucker Cooke Gallery in Owen Hall. These events are free and open to the public.

Writers at Home Series Continues with Readings by Great Smokies Writing Program Poetry Class

Poets participating in UNC Asheville's Great Smokies Writing Program will read their work, created under the guidance of Katherine Soniat, in the next installment of the Writers at Home series. The reading begins at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, at Malaprop's Bookstore/Café, 55 Haywood St., downtown Asheville. It is free and open to the public.

West African Art Exhibit and Lecture at UNC Asheville

Art educator, collector, and curator Jan Goffney will present an exhibit of West African art at UNC Asheville's Highsmith University Union Gallery. The exhibit, "African Art: A Collectors Perspective," includes traditional masks, mortar and pestles, slave shackles and Kente cloths, and will be on view from January 10-February 7. Goffney will also give a lecture accompanying the exhibit at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, in the gallery. A reception featuring traditional West African foods will begin at 5:30 p.m. The events are free and open to the public.

UNC Asheville's Holly Iglesias Awarded Prestigious NEA Literature Fellowship

Holly Iglesias, poet, translator and lecturer in UNC Asheville's Master of Liberal Arts Program, has been awarded a prestigious Creative Writing Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). Iglesias is the only North Carolinian and one of only 42 poets chosen nationally to receive the $25,000 fellowship for 2011.

UNC Asheville’s Blowers Gallery Hosts Exhibition by Asheville Artist Marsha Balbier

UNC Asheville’s Blowers Gallery will present "The Essence of Asheville," an exhibit of glass and encaustic artwork by local artist Marsha Balbier, January 5-30. The exhibition includes works in fused and shaped glass as well as encaustic paintings, which are created using heated beeswax.

UNC Asheville Chamber Singers to Perform at White House December 13

For the fourth consecutive year, the UNC Asheville Chamber Singers have been invited to perform at the White House. The Chamber Singers, the university's premiere student voice ensemble, will sing at the White House on December 13, entertaining VIP tours at the Holiday Open House. The choir will perform under the direction of Melodie Galloway, UNC Asheville assistant professor of music.

UNC Asheville to Hold Holiday Ceramic and Art Sale

UNC Asheville’s Art Department will hold its annual holiday sale of ceramics, glass and other art objects from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3, and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, in the S. Tucker Cooke Gallery, located on the ground floor of Owen Hall. The sale is open to the public.

UNC Asheville Holds Student Ceramic Exhibition

"Figurative Reflections," an exhibition by UNC Asheville senior Katie Scully of approximately 100 wood-fired ceramic pots inspired by the human form, will be on view in the Highsmith University Union Gallery from December 3-16. An opening reception will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3, in the gallery.
