Robotics, Watercolor and Insurance - Varied Summer Workshops at the N.C. Center for Creative Retirement

The N.C. Center for Creative Retirement (NCCCR) offers three very different workshops this summer: "Textures and Special Effects in Watercolor," "Understanding Your Existing Long-Term Care Insurance Policy," and "Robots for Beginners – You CAN Do It!" All three workshops are open to the public and will meet at UNC Asheville's Reuter Center.

Pan Harmonia Offers Series of Concerts at UNC Asheville June 15-18

Pan Harmonia, featuring small ensembles of top-flight professional performers, will present a series of concerts at UNC Asheville – one for children, one for adults who've kept their sense of musical adventure, and one featuring adult students who have spent a week studying with Pan Harmonia. Classical Voice North Carolina described one of the group's recent performances as "spellbinding," with "joy-filled abandon."

Local Artists Diane Bove and Michael Smith to Exhibit at UNC Asheville Blowers Gallery

Asheville artists Diane Bove and her son Michael Smith will present their work in a new exhibit, "Capturing the Essence," at UNC Asheville's Blowers Gallery, June 2-July 27. Bove, a painter, works in bright acrylics. Smith is a fabric artist and uses the shibori dye process. An opening reception with the artists will be held from 4-6 p.m. Friday, June 3, in the Gallery.

Outdoor Digital Photography, Photo Book-Making and Crochet Workshops Offered at N.C. Center for Creative Retirement

The N.C. Center for Creative Retirement presents three workshops in June, "Outdoor Digital Photography," "Making a Bound Photo Book" and "Heritage Crochet in Contemporary Design and Application." All will meet at UNC Asheville's Reuter Center and are open to the public.

Math Meets Craft to Raise Awareness of Threats to Coral Reefs

Western North Carolina is joining a global effort to crochet a coral reef. As part of the unique project, the "Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef" by the Institute For Figuring (IFF) in Los Angeles, which unites non-Euclidean hyperbolic geometry with ancient craft techniques, area artisans are working to create beautiful and lifelike models that will raise awareness of threats to the world's coral. The Asheville Reef, organized by UNC Asheville's Center for Craft, Creativity & Design, will involve crochet groups in Brevard and Hendersonville, as well as UNC Asheville, Appalachian State University and Western Carolina University.

Writers at Home Spring Series Concludes with Readings from "The Great Smokies Review"

Contributors from the Fall 2010 and Spring 2011 issues of "The Great Smokies Review," the online literary magazine published by UNC Asheville’s Great Smokies Writing Program, will present a reading of their works at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 15, at Malaprop’s Book Store/Café, 55 Haywood St., downtown Asheville.

2011 Windgate Fellows announced by UNC Asheville's Center for Craft, Creativity & Design

UNC Asheville's Center for Craft, Creativity & Design (CCCD) has awarded ten graduating seniors each with $15,000 in the form of a Windgate Fellowship. More than 70 universities from across the United States were each invited to each nominate two graduating seniors with exemplary skill in craft for one of the largest awards offered nationally to art students. Applicants completed an online application with images of their work and a proposal outlining how the $15,000 would enhance their careers.

New Asheville Chamber Music Institute to Debut at UNC Asheville in June

UNC Asheville will host a new summer music program, the Asheville Chamber Music Institute, June 13-18 on the campus. The institute will offer adult amateur woodwind and brass players of various levels the chance to study and play with world-class performers who are part of a new musical collaborative called Pan Harmonia. The Asheville Chamber Music Institute is one of only two all-wind programs of its kind in the nation this year.

Still "Feelin' Groovy" – Reuter Center Singers to Present '60s Folk Songfest

The Reuter Center Singers will present a '60s Folk Songfest at 3 p.m. Sunday May 15, at UNC Asheville's Reuter Center. A chorus of more than 50 voices, the Reuter Center Singers stage spring and fall concerts at the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement, and perform in many other community venues, including Biltmore House, the Veterans' Administration Hospital, churches and retirement homes.

Cartoon Illustrations Exhibited at UNC Asheville's Blowers Gallery

"Illustrating Cartoon Narratives," a collection of drawings and prints by UNC Asheville senior Jared Espinoza, will be on display from April 27-May 13 in UNC Asheville's Ramsey Library, Blowers Gallery. A reception with the artist will be held from 4-6 p.m. Friday, May 6, in the gallery. The works combine Espinoza's cartoon vision with the approaches of 18th and 19th century cartoonists. The show is a culmination of Espinoza's work towards a bachelor's degree at UNC Asheville.
