Exhibit of "Rapid Prototyped" Sculptures by Gene Felice at UNC Asheville's Highsmith Gallery

An interactive sculpture exhibit, "A Rapid Progression," by artist Gene Felice, will open September 12 at UNC Asheville's Highsmith University Union Gallery. Felice designed the forms through the process of three-dimensional modeling, and then used printers and rapid prototyping machines to give the designs solid form. This exhibit also includes an electricity-generating bicycle which viewers can pedal to power other exhibited works, and an interactive, solar-powered LED lighting system. "A Rapid Progression" will remain on display through October 4.

UNC Asheville's Great Smokies Writing Program Announces Fall Workshops

Some of the area’s best authors and instructors are featured in the new fall lineup of workshops from UNC Asheville's Great Smokies Writing Program (GSWP). Courses will help hone the skills of writers of poetry and prose, including memoir, novels, and creative nonfiction. Some classes are open to interested writers of all levels; some are restricted to more advanced writers. In all cases, class size is limited and early registration is suggested.
New Exhibit to Feature Works by UNC Asheville Studio Art Faculty

Works by 11 UNC Asheville Art Department faculty members will be featured in a wide-ranging exhibition Aug. 26-Sept. 16 at UNC Asheville's S. Tucker Cooke Gallery. The show kicks off the gallery's 2011-2012 season. An opening reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, in the gallery.
“Art of the Book” Exhibit at UNC Asheville’s Blowers Gallery Opens August 17

“Art of the Book: Process, Product and Community at Asheville BookWorks,” an exhibit of printmaking, binding, paper-making and related processes, opens Wednesday, August 17, at Blowers Gallery in UNC Asheville’s Ramsey Library. The exhibit showcases the work of instructors and students at Asheville BookWorks, a West Asheville studio space and gathering place for those interested in print and book arts.
UNC Asheville Fall Art Season Begins with Selected Student Exhibition

UNC Asheville’s Department of Art will begin the new academic year with an exhibit of student art work selected by the Art faculty. The show, featuring more than a dozen works in a variety of media, opens on Wednesday, Aug. 10, and will remain on display through Sept. 6, at the Highsmith University Union Gallery on the campus.
New Grant to Fund Improvements at the Rudnick Trail at the Center for Craft, Creativity & Design

The Perry N. Rudnick Endowment Fund of the Community Foundation of Henderson County has awarded a $19,000 grant to UNC Asheville’s Center for Craft, Creativity & Design (CCC&D) to improve the center's popular Perry N. Rudnick Nature and Public Art Trail. Funds will be used to update and print trail maps, repair and add signage, clear debris, and add new plants.
Robotics, Watercolor and Insurance - Varied Summer Workshops at the N.C. Center for Creative Retirement

The N.C. Center for Creative Retirement (NCCCR) offers three very different workshops this summer: "Textures and Special Effects in Watercolor," "Understanding Your Existing Long-Term Care Insurance Policy," and "Robots for Beginners – You CAN Do It!" All three workshops are open to the public and will meet at UNC Asheville's Reuter Center.
Pan Harmonia Offers Series of Concerts at UNC Asheville June 15-18

Pan Harmonia, featuring small ensembles of top-flight professional performers, will present a series of concerts at UNC Asheville – one for children, one for adults who've kept their sense of musical adventure, and one featuring adult students who have spent a week studying with Pan Harmonia. Classical Voice North Carolina described one of the group's recent performances as "spellbinding," with "joy-filled abandon."
Local Artists Diane Bove and Michael Smith to Exhibit at UNC Asheville Blowers Gallery

Asheville artists Diane Bove and her son Michael Smith will present their work in a new exhibit, "Capturing the Essence," at UNC Asheville's Blowers Gallery, June 2-July 27. Bove, a painter, works in bright acrylics. Smith is a fabric artist and uses the shibori dye process. An opening reception with the artists will be held from 4-6 p.m. Friday, June 3, in the Gallery.
