October “Writers at Home” Features Poetry Readings

Poets who have honed and developed their work in UNC Asheville’s Great Smokies Writing Program will be featured in the next installment of Writers at Home. The reading, featuring five area poets, will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday, October 16, at Malaprop's Bookstore/Café, 55 Haywood St., downtown Asheville. It is free and open to the public.

“Pierced” – Photo Exhibit of Facial Adornment Opens at UNC Asheville

“Pierced,” an exhibit of portraits by photographer Leigh Svenson, is now on display and has an opening reception from 4-6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7 in the Blowers Gallery at UNC Asheville’s Ramsey Library. Svenson’s black-and-white photos, using the gelatin silver process, express his fascination with piercings.

Varied and Busy Concert Season for UNC Asheville Music Department

UNC Asheville’s Music Department will present a varied program of concerts on the campus this fall by student musicians with faculty and other special guests. Six performances are scheduled in October, three in November, and the series will conclude with the annual Holiday Concert in December. Admission is $5 at the door for each performance, with students and children free.

UNC Asheville Hosts 2nd Annual Invitational Art Exhibition

UNC Asheville’s 2nd Annual Invitational Art Exhibition, featuring 18 artists invited to exhibit by the Art Department faculty, opens with a reception from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23 at the S. Tucker Cooke Gallery on the campus. The show will remain on display through October 25 and includes works in the six concentrations offered in the Art Department: ceramics, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture.

Hispanic Heritage Month Events Include Talk by Fidel Castro’s Daughter

During National Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15-October 15, UNC Asheville will host a series of special events, including appearances by writers Stephanie Elizondo Griest and Gabriela Garcia Medina, and a talk by Alina Fernandez, daughter of Fidel Castro.

Writers at Home Fall Series Begins Sunday

Poet Susan Lefler and nonfiction writer Jennifer McGaha will kick off the Writers at Home fall series with a reading at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, at Malaprop's Bookstore/Café, 55 Haywood St., downtown Asheville. The Writers at Home series, sponsored by UNC Asheville’s Great Smokies Writing Program, is free and open to the public.

Filmmaker, Actor Adrian Grenier to Speak and Screen “Teenage Paparazzo” at UNC Asheville

Adrian Grenier will host a screening of his documentary film, “Teenage Paparazzo,” and take questions from the audience at UNC Asheville’s Lipinsky Auditorium, on Saturday, Sept. 24. The film begins at 6:30 p.m. with discussion to follow after the film and an art reception with Grenier at approximately 9 p.m.

Book Artists Laurie Corral and Frank Brannon Offer Gallery Talk at UNC Asheville’s Blowers Gallery

The history and techniques of book art will be the subject of a gallery talk and reception at Blowers Gallery in UNC Asheville’s Ramsey Library, from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28. The event will highlight the closing day of the Blowers Gallery exhibit, “Art of the Book: Process, Product and Community at Asheville BookWorks.”

Jonathan Scales Kicks Off UNC Asheville Cultural Events Season with Free Café-Style Show

With a bang of the steel pans, the Jonathan Scales Fourchestra will kick off the 2011-2012 season of UNC Asheville’s Cultural Events and Distinguished Speaker Series. This high-energy performance will take place at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, in the Highsmith University Union Grotto. The concert is free and open to the public, but there is limited café-style seating, so early arrival is suggested.
