Thu, 09/05/2013 - 9:54am
Registration is now open for UNC Asheville’s acclaimed Super Saturday program for creative, highly motivated and/or academically gifted 3rd-8th graders, which begins on October 5. The 21 courses cover topics including stage magic, art, wildlife exploration, geometry, animation, logic, quilting, martial arts and much more. Every Fall and Spring the Super Saturday program allows more than 400 children from across Western North Carolina explore their special interests through hands-on learning on the UNC Asheville campus.
Students can explore cultures near and far in “Celebrating Our Diversity,” or by studying “German Language & Culture.” Budding scientists and engineers can explore roller coasters and rocketry in “Physics is All Around Us,” test their reasoning skills in “Logic in Fun & Fun in Logic,” or choose “The Science of Toymaking” to construct kaleidoscopes, stomp rockets and more. “Chess Adventures” and “Theatre Arts” are also likely to be popular.
UNC Asheville Super Saturday classes are taught by faculty members, local school teachers, area professionals, experienced crafters, and upper-level college students.
Super Saturday courses are generally open to students in grades 3-8; some courses are restricted to certain grades. Classes meet from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays from October 5-November 9.
All students are welcome to attend; the mail-in registration deadline is September 27 and online registration closes September 29. Late registration for courses that are not filled will be available in-person only on October 5 in Carmichael Hall, with a $15 late fee. Tuition is $69 for each six-week course. A limited number of need-based scholarships are available.
