“The Race to Nowhere” Film Screening and Panel at UNC Asheville on April 11
April 1, 2013
The documentary film "The Race to Nowhere – The Dark Side of America's Achievement Culture," will be screened at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 11, in UNC Asheville's Highsmith University Union, Room 143. A panel discussion with educators, parents, students and community members will follow.
Produced by self-described "concerned mother" Vicki Abeles, "The Race to Nowhere" takes aim at what she calls "the culture of hollow achievement and pressure to perform... destroying our children's love of learning and feeding an epidemic of unprepared, disengaged, and unhealthy children."
The panel discussion will feature Jeanne McGlinn and Jerad Crave of UNC Asheville's Department of Education, Tom Trigg, head of school at Carolina Day School, and others.
This event is free and open to the public, and is co-sponsored by UNC Asheville's Department of Education and the university's Office of Teacher Recruitment. For more information, visit education.unca.edu or call 828.251.6304.
