UNC Asheville's Athletics Program Recertified by NCAA
March 16, 2012
UNC Asheville administrators have received official notification from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) confirming the recertification of the university's athletic program. UNC Asheville was last recertified in 2002.
"We are very please to received this official confirmation of the soundness of our intercollegiate athletics program," said UNC Asheville Chancellor Anne Ponder. "It is a rewarding moment when peer evaluators confirm the excellence of our program and the contributions of our staff, our student-athletes, our coaches and our faculty."
"I would like to thank everyone who was involved with our certification process over the past couple of years for their help in making this possible," said UNC Asheville Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone. "Dr. Keith Krumpe, the chair of our certification committee, did a wonderful job leading our group and helping us achieve certification once again."
A certification designation confirms that an institution operates its athletics program in compliance with the operating principles adopted by the NCAA Division I membership. The 18-member NCAA Committee on Athletics Certification, as well as a NCAA-designated peer review team, examined the primary components of UNC Asheville's athletics program: governance and commitment to rules compliance, academic integrity, gender/diversity issues and student-athlete well-being. UNC Asheville also completed a two-year self-study as part of the recertification process.
