Outdoor Digital Photography, Photo Book-Making and Crochet Workshops Offered at N.C. Center for Creative Retirement

The N.C. Center for Creative Retirement presents three workshops in June, "Outdoor Digital Photography," "Making a Bound Photo Book" and "Heritage Crochet in Contemporary Design and Application." All will meet at UNC Asheville's Reuter Center and are open to the public.

"Mountains Majestic," photo by Richard Bernabe"Outdoor Digital Photography" will be taught by Richard Bernabe, editor-in-chief of the Nature Photographers Network online magazine, and primary writer and editor of the "Ultimate Guide to Digital Nature Photography." Workshop participants will take to the Blue Ridge Parkway to shoot a sunrise, wildflowers and more. Topics will include composition, exposure, landscapes, close-ups, presentation using Photoshop software, etc. Participants should bring and be familiar with their own camera and related equipment. The workshop will take place 5 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, June 4. Cost is $165 for members of the N.C. Center for Creative Retirement and $175 for non-members.

"Making a Bound Photo Book" will take participants through the process of uploading photos from their digital cameras, organizing and editing the best shots, and producing a unique book electronically through Shutterfly.com. The workshop will be taught by photographer, author and educator Carrie Wagner, and takes place 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on June 13, 15 and 17. Cost for the workshop is $120 for members of the N.C. Center for Creative Retirement and $130 for non-members. The materials fee will range from $40 to $70, depending upon the size of the book chosen.

"Heritage Crochet in Contemporary Design and Application" will be taught by Rita de Maintenon, a Blue Ridge National Heritage Artist, and a member of HandMade in America and the Southern Highland Craft Guild. She will teach the history and techniques of hairpin and broomstick lace, and lead participants in experimentation with Tunisian and Aran crochet, and German and Irish thread patterns. This workshop will take place from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, June 18. The cost is $85 for members of the N.C. Center for Creative Retirement and $95 for non-members.
