Three Hands-On Workshops Offered at North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement

Registration is now open for the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement October workshops. The hands-on courses, which are open to students of various ages and skills, range from lessons in contemporary crochet applications to mask-making for Halloween.

Fiber artist Rita de Maintenon will lead a "Heritage Crochet Treasures" workshop from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 2. Students will create their own heirloom crochet design through the application of heritage fiber techniques, including hairpin and broomstick lace, Tunisian and Aran crochet and Irish thread patterns. Basic crochet experience is required. De Maintenon, a retired educator, trained in fiber arts while growing up in Germany. She is a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild, HandMade in America and is a Blue Ridge Heritage Artist. Cost for the workshop is $85, plus $25 for materials.

Robin Rector Krupp, author and illustrator of children's books, will teach her "Make a Mask!" workshops in two sections, from 9 a.m. – noon, Saturday, Oct. 16 and 23, and 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16 and Oct. 23. Students are encouraged to bring recyclables, fabric and other materials from home to create a mask for parties, trick-or-treat or wall art. The class will explore various mask-making traditions from around the world. This workshop is available to everyone age six and older. Cost for the workshop is $20 for adults and $10 for children, plus $5 for materials.

Artist Karen Bell will teach a "Commemorative Art" workshop from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 30. The class will provide students with the opportunity to create a mixed-media commemorative art piece to honor an event, person, pet or special life passage. Students are encouraged to bring fabric, buttons and other materials to share. Bell is a professional weaver, silk screen artist and graphic designer. Cost for the workshop is $75.
