"Sí, pero no lo soy" (Yes, but I'm not) - Teatro Latino

With five actors portraying 38 characters, this is a collection of theatrical sketches about identity. It has been has been staged in Spain, Costa Rica and Columbia. Now, thanks to the work of UNC Asheville faculty, students and alumni, “Sí, pero no lo soy” will make its North American debut at the N.C. Stage Company in Asheville.

The cast of “Sí, pero no lo soy” The cast of “Sí, pero no lo soy” Greta Trautmann, chair of the Foreign Languages Department, is a member of the cast and directs the production. The vignettes are performed in the native tongue of Spanish author Alfredo Sanzol and supporting notes in English are provided in the program. “The beauty of this text is its universality,” says Trautmann. “In this way, it is accessible to all audiences, both Latino and non-Latino.” The play contains adult language and is not recommended for children.

The Drama Department is providing technical support and recent graduate Garth Grimball is choreographer. Three members of the Asheville-based band Hello Hugo - alumni Justin V. Holt, Rosser Douglas and Nick Prather - provide the music.

“Sí, pero no lo soy” is part of the N.C. Stage Catalyst Series, and is presented by Teatro Latino de Asheville, or TELASH. TELASH is sponsored by UNC Asheville’s Foreign Languages Department, Multicultural Student Programs, and the UNC Asheville student group HOLA (Hermanos Orgullosos en las Américas). Performances take place at 15 Stage Lane in downtown Asheville, August 27 through September 5, with 7:30 p.m. curtain on Friday and Saturday, and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. More information and tickets are available at the N.C.
