One Leg Up Plays UNC Asheville's Concerts on the Quad

One Leg Up Performs on July 12UNC Asheville's 28th annual Concerts on the Quad summer music series continues with a performance by the five-piece Gypsy jazz band One Leg Up at 7 p.m. Monday, July 12, on the Quad. The band features John Steinman on guitar and vocals; Jim Tanner on guitar; Mike Guzalak on clarinet, sax and vocals; Zak Page on bass; and Steve Trismen on violin and vocals. The event is free and open to the public.

Playing a mix of Gypsy, Latin, swing and original tunes, Asheville's own One Leg Up has been performing to rave reviews for more than seven years. Their second and latest release, "Pere LaChaise," has them breathing new life into the 1930s and '40s French Gypsy jazz tradition with new arrangements of Django Reinhardt classics and American big band hits.

Concerts on the Quad is fun for the entire family. The public is invited to bring picnics, blankets and lawn chairs. Sorry, no pets allowed. With nearly 2,000 attending each concert, lawn-chair seating will be separate from blanket seating to preserve sight lines; please look for signage when arriving on the Quad. Check the Café a la Quad tent for snacks and beverages.

In case of rain, the concerts will be held in Lipinsky Auditorium. A limited menu will be served on rainy evenings. Concert location decisions are made at 5 p.m. the day of the show. Patrons may call 828/232-5000 line 3 after 5 p.m. each Monday to hear a recorded announcement about the location of that evening’s performance.

The season will wrap up July 24-25 with the 27th annual Folkmoot USA festival, the only ticketed event of the series. This popular event will feature folk dance and music from around the world. Folkmoot tickets range from $10-$25 and are available online at www.folkmootusa.org or by phone at 877/FOLKUSA.

Concerts on the Quad is presented in part with generous support from Biltmore Farms Hotels, Greenlife Grocery, WNC Tents, Clear Channel Asheville, Mast General Store, Mountain Air Network WCQS/WYQS, Musicians' Workshop, Clothes Encounters, Ray and Allen Funeral Service, Town and Mountain Realty and David and Lin Brown.
