The UNC Asheville Art Department will host its 43rd Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition April 16-27 in UNC Asheville’s S. Tucker Cooke Gallery, located on the first floor of Owen Hall. Internationally exhibited artist Nina Katchadourian will serve as juror.
An opening reception will be held from 6-9 p.m. Friday, April 16, in the gallery. At 6:30 p.m., Art Front, the university student art organization, will present student awards in various categories, including sculpture, painting, printmaking, drawing, ceramics, photography and multimedia. Art scholarships will also be announced by UNC Asheville's Art Department faculty.
In conjunction with the exhibition, Katchadourian will give a lecture at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 15, in UNC Asheville's Owen Conference Center, located on the third floor of Owen Hall. All events are free and open to the public.
From animal cross-dressing and repairing spider webs to using popping popcorn to create messages in Morse code, Katchadourian's work crosses boundaries in both media and disciplines. Her work has been exhibited internationally and domestically, including shows at the P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center in New York City, the Serpentine Gallery in London, New Langton Arts in San Francisco, Artists Space in New York City and the Palais de Tokyo. In 2006, the Turku Art Museum in Finland featured a solo show of works Katchadourian created while living in Finland. Also in 2006, the Tang Museum in Saratoga Springs exhibited a 10-year survey of her work and published an accompanying monograph entitled "All Forms of Attraction." Katchadourian has received a number of awards and fellowships, including the Tiffany Foundation for the Arts Award and the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship.
The gallery is open from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. weekdays. Admission is free. For more information, call UNC Asheville’s Art Department at 828/251-6559.
