Some 5,000 people will fill UNC Asheville's Main University Quadrangle beginning 9 a.m. Saturday, May 5, as the university holds its 84th annual Commencement ceremony. Among the 480 students who have earned diplomas, more than 430 are expected to participate in commencement.

UNC Asheville is now accepting applications for a new K-12 teacher licensure program in Health and Physical Education. The program, approved this spring by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction, begins in Fall 2012.
This addition to UNC Asheville's Teacher Education Program combines health education and physical education as complementary courses of study. Those enrolled will learn how to implement a comprehensive program for students that provides skills to reduce risk-taking behaviors and encourage personal health promotion.

Catherine Frank, director of the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement at UNC Asheville, will discuss the center's genesis and future with William Friday on UNC-TV's "North Carolina People" set to air at 9 p.m. Friday, April 20, and 5:30 p.m. Sunday, April 22.

UNC Asheville recently presented its annual alumni and student leaderships awards at a special ceremony on campus. Chancellor Anne Ponder, Vice Chancellor Bill Haggard, and UNC Asheville National Alumni Council Chair Barbara Baker ('71) made the presentations.

UNC Asheville and the Astronomy Club of Asheville today announced a joint project to build a small laboratory on the north side of campus that will significantly expand student opportunities for studying optical astronomy.

Erskine Bowles, one of North Carolina’s best-known public servants, will deliver the commencement address and receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree when UNC Asheville holds its May 2012 Commencement at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 5. Al Whitesides, a lifetime Asheville resident, and leader in civil rights, business and education, will also receive an honorary degree.

The North Asheville Tailgate Market, a Saturday morning tradition for those who love fresh produce, baked goods and flowers, will reopen for its 32nd season on Saturday, April 14, on the UNC Asheville campus. The market is open from 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday and offers plenty of convenient parking.

UNC Asheville will host a sexual harassment “speak-out” at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 11, in the Humanities Lecture Hall on the campus. Taking place during April, Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the speak-out will bring voice to diverse experiences of sexual harassment, and provide information about preventing and defending oneself against sexual harassment. The event is free and open to the public.

UNC Asheville and the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce will host a "Way to Go, Asheville" Rally on Tuesday, March 27, to thank the fans, volunteers and sponsors of the recent Southern Conference and Big South basketball tournaments. The hour-long event, which is free and open to the public, begins at 4:30 p.m. in the Mountain View Room of the Sherrill Center on the UNC Asheville campus.

UNC Asheville administrators have received official notification from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) confirming the recertification of the university's athletic program. UNC Asheville was last recertified in 2002.
"We are very please to received this official confirmation of the soundness of our intercollegiate athletics program," said UNC Asheville Chancellor Anne Ponder. "It is a rewarding moment when peer evaluators confirm the excellence of our program and the contributions of our staff, our student-athletes, our coaches and our faculty."
