UNC Asheville will hold its December 2013 Commencement, with 263 graduates receiving diplomas, at Kimmel Arena in the Sherrill Center on campus. The commencement ceremony begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14, and is free and open to the public.

Natasha Alexenko, a sexual assault survivor and founder of Natasha’s Justice Project, will discuss her efforts to end the backlog of untested rape kits to bring justice in cases of sexual assault in a presentation at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7 at UNC Asheville’s Karpen Hall, Laurel Forum. UNC Asheville’s Healthy Aging Program Initiatives (HAPI) Lab, in collaboration with the Land of Sky Area Agency on Aging, will host an intergenerational Wisdom Film Festival from 12-6:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 24 in the university’s Sherrill Center, Mission Health Systems Mountain View Conference Room. The festival, which is free and open to the public, will include film screenings, discussions and activities exploring perceptions on aging.

A symposium on “Understanding Water’s Role in Supporting Humanity, Industry and the Global Economy” will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 19, in UNC Asheville’s Reuter Center, home of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. This event is free and open to the public.
The featured presenters will be John Stoltzfus, chief investment strategist for Oppenheimer Management Inc., and Jeffrey Wilcox, UNC Asheville associate professor of environmental studies. The symposium is hosted by Oppenheimer & Co. Inc. in collaboration with UNC Asheville.

UNC Asheville named its fitness area in honor of Samuel Schuman, the university’s third chancellor (1991-1993), in an August 24 ceremony that brought together present and former faculty and staff, Schuman’s family and friends, and even some of his former students.

Bennett Award for Extraordinary Contributions to Citizen Science from the National Center for Science and Civic Engagement.

The second annual National Physical Education (PE) Institute, hosted by the North Carolina Center for Health and Wellness (NCCHW) at UNC Asheville, will bring physical education teachers and administrators from around the world to the campus, July 29-August 2.
During this event, hundreds of participants and selected presenters from across the United States and abroad will focus attention on how schools can more effectively use their limited resources to implement new strategies and programs promoting better fitness, health, and obesity prevention for K-12 children and youth.
