A presentation of "The Parchman Hour" and a keynote talk by Gwendolyn Boyd, longtime activist for women's equality and recruitment of African Americans into science and engineering, will highlight Martin Luther King Jr. Week at UNC Asheville. The week will also include opportunities for student participation in a day of service during the Martin Luther King Jr. national holiday, and transportation for students to other area events celebrating King's life and legacy.

UNC Asheville will host a meeting to brief university neighbors on plans for new signage on and around campus, and progress on the Reed Creek greenway. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, at UNC Asheville's Sherrill Center, Mountain View Room. Parking will be available in the Sherrill Center deck at no cost, and all members of the community are encouraged to attend.

UNC Asheville's Department of Public Safety will conduct a routine test of the campus outdoor emergency siren and speaker system, between 10 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 17. This is a routine test in accordance with the University's emergency notification maintenance and testing protocols.

UNC Asheville students will showcase their work in community service projects and internships at a celebration with community partners from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, in the Kimmel Arena on campus.
More than 400 people, including representatives of community partner organizations, faculty, students and others interested in community service work are expected to attend. Students will have displays set up and will be on hand to describe their work. Light refreshments will be served at the celebration.

UNC Asheville will host its annual Head Start Holiday Party from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, in the Highsmith University Union, Alumni Hall. Donated gifts are already wrapped and individually labeled for the 107 youngsters in the Pisgah View and Barnardsville Head Start centers who will attend.
This year's party will feature crafts, games, food, storytelling, dancing and Charles James, associate professor of chemistry, making his annual appearance as Santa Claus.
