Impractical Labor in Service of Speculative Arts (ILSSA), an art project and membership organization for those who make experimental or conceptual work with obsolete technology, will hold an exhibition and opening reception at UNC Asheville's Center for Craft, Creativity & Design from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, July 6.

UPDATE, July 5, 2103: All tickets have now been distributed. Ticket holders should arrive 15 minutes before the concerts. Shortly before the concert, any open seats will be given to those without tickets.

Plans to complete Phase III of the Reed Creek Greenway through property owned by the UNC Asheville Foundation on Broadway Avenue are one step closer to implementation. Recently, the UNC Asheville Foundation received approval of its 2013 Federal Recreational Trails Program grant of $200,000 administered by the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation. The N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources has approved the grant and once other environmental, archeological and regulatory reviews are completed, the grant can be awarded.

UNC Asheville's Biology Department and the Botanical Gardens at Asheville will celebrate Appalachian nature with the 41st annual Spring Wildflower and Bird Pilgrimage May 3-5. This weekend of special events, including talks and guided tours, will focus on local flora and fauna. All are open to the public.

"Write Now," a creative writing program for high school students, will return to UNC Asheville this summer with workshops held weekdays, June 17-28, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. "Write Now" offers each participating student experience in different styles of writing – fiction, creative non-fiction and poetry – under the tutelage of three of Asheville's finest writing instructors.

Local writers will have the opportunity to hone their skills with UNC Asheville's Great Smokies Writing Program summer workshops in poetry and prose. Classes will be held in Asheville and Waynesville and are open to all interested writers. Class size is limited, so early registration is suggested.

Nikki Giovanni, the renowned poet, activist and educator, will deliver the commencement address and receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree when UNC Asheville holds its May 2013 Commencement. Warren Haynes, the rock guitarist, singer, songwriter, and creator of Asheville's annual Christmas Jam, also will receive an honorary degree. The ceremony begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 11.

Rabbi Sheila Weinberg, co-founder of the Institute for Jewish Spirituality, will present a talk, "Aging with Awareness," at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, at UNC Asheville's Reuter Center. Weinberg's talk is sponsored by the university's Center for Jewish Studies and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UNC Asheville. This event is free and open to the public.
