Best-selling novelist Wiley Cash will headline “Celebrating Madison County,” featuring literature, music and photography, presented on October 25-26 at UNC Asheville. Cash will offer a solo reading, and other well-known area writers, photographers and performers will share their creative responses to the cultural heritage and rugged physical beauty of Madison County during this free, two-day event.

Registration is now open for UNC Asheville’s acclaimed Super Saturday program for creative, highly motivated and/or academically gifted 3rd-8th graders, which begins on October 5. The 21 courses cover topics including stage magic, art, wildlife exploration, geometry, animation, logic, quilting, martial arts and much more. Every Fall and Spring the Super Saturday program allows more than 400 children from across Western North Carolina explore their special interests through hands-on learning on the UNC Asheville campus.

“Reading Dick and Jane with Me,” an exhibition by Clarissa Sligh, will open with a reception at 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, in UNC Asheville’s Intercultural Gallery in Highsmith University Union. Sligh also will present a talk, “Power, Privilege, Visibility,” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26 in the Highsmith University Union Grotto.

Poet Tina Barr and novelist Bonnie MacDougal will kick off the Writers at Home fall series with a reading at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, at Malaprop's Bookstore/Café, 55 Haywood St., downtown Asheville. The Writers at Home series, sponsored by UNC Asheville’s Great Smokies Writing Program, is free and open to the public.

UNC Asheville’s Ramsey Library will host a reception at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28, to introduce the new exhibition of photos and vintage technology, called “Our Evolving Library.” The reception will provide library patrons and supporters a chance to talk to library staff about future needs and direction of library services.
The “Our Evolving Library” exhibit will include items from the time when UNC Asheville’s early incarnation, Asheville Biltmore College, was housed at Seely’s Castle, and documents the library’s history through the transition into the Internet era.
