UNC Asheville’s National Environmental Modeling and Analysis Center (NEMAC) is an applied research group that thrives due to its collaborations. NEMAC collaborates with other academic institutions; local, state and federal government; and private enterprise. Our research begins with addressing environmental issues and data sets tied to weather, climate, forest health, water resources and a variety of related issues. We then examine the interaction of humanity’s infrastructure with the environment to address key issues that affect our society including hazard mitigation, climate change, competitive land use, and the wise use of our energy and water resources.
Undergraduate research is a core value of NEMAC that supports students as they work on intellectually driven projects with faculty mentors from a wide range of the liberal arts that include atmospheric sciences, environmental studies, computer science, multimedia arts and sciences and management and accountancy.
NEMAC’s current projects are the RENCI at UNC Asheville Engagement Site, EFETAC, the Southern Appalachian Report Card on Sustainability, CERO, and the Hub Technology Cluster.
Collaborators include NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), the USDA Forest Service, the State of North Carolina through the Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI), The City of Asheville, Buncombe County, The North Carolina Arboretum, RiverLink, Colburn Earth Science Museum, The Applied Visualization Lab, and many others.
