Two-Plus-Two Engineering Program (2+2)
A joint program offered by
North Carolina State University and The University of North Carolina at
Asheville
PURPOSE
The Two-Plus-Two Engineering Program allows students to complete the
first two years of an engineering curriculum at UNCA, qualify for transfer to NCSU and finish their
education in two more years at North Carolina State University College of Engineering (COE) in
Raleigh. The program includes the following degree programs:
- Aerospace Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Civil Engineering (Construction Option) Click here for PLANS of STUDY
- Computer Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Environmental Engineering
- Industrial Engineering
- Materials Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
The following curricula are also supported, but must be completed on a
1-1/2 + 2-1/2 year schedule:
- Biological and Agricultural Engineering
- Biomedical Engineering
- Chemical Engineering
- Nuclear Engineering
- Textile Engineering
Regardless of curriculum preference, all students in the Two-Plus-Two
Program take the same courses during their freshman year, with the
exception of one course. The sophomore year has some differences, but
they are relatively minor. Many of the requirements for NCSU engineering
degrees parallel the requirements for UNCA science majors but vary when
it comes to humanities and physical education standards. The
universities also have different transfer credit policies.
GOOD REASONS TO GO THE 2+2 Route
POLICY ON TRANSFER TO NCSU COE
Ideally, students working toward an engineering degree should transfer
when they have completed approximately the first half of the curriculum.
However, a student is eligible to transfer at any time after the
matriculation requirements, listed below, are satisfied. Students complete
an NCSU Transfer Application and submit it to the NCSU Engineering Programs
Office at UNCA. Transfer admission standards vary with each degree program according to
the space available and the number of applicants, but a minimum grade point
average of 2.90 is required to assure entrance into the curriculum of first choice.
For cases in which the cumulative GPA is between 2.5 and 2.9, departmental review
will determine the admission decision, and students are not guaranteed the
curriculum of first choice. Note: Biomedical Engineering requires a GPA
significantly higher than 3.0.
In order to transfer into an engineering curriculum at NCSU, students must
have completed at least 30 credits including the
MATRICULATION REQUIREMENTS,
all with a grade of C- or better:
- Chemistry - 1 semester
- Calculus - 2 semesters
- Calculus-based Physics - 1 semester
- English Composition - 1 semester (4 cr)
- Humanities or Social Science course - 1 semester
In addition to the requirements on the cumulative GPA, the GPA between the
last two math classes taken must be at least 2.500. If NCSU courses are taken,
the overall NCSU GPA must be at least 2.000.
ENGINEERING COURSES AT UNCA
The required sophomore-level engineering courses are available at UNCA
via distance education technology from NC State. Students enrolled
in certain programs will need to attend summer school at NCSU between
their sophomore and junior years in order to complete the engineering
degree program in four years.
COOPERATIVE EDUCATION
NCSU's College of Engineering has an active co-op program, making it
possible for Two-Plus-Two students to alternate on-the-job experience
with classroom learning and graduate with a co-op certificate after 12
months of work in a structured situation. Students are not eligible for
the co-op program until they are admissible to one of NCSU's engineering
degree programs.
HOW TO ENTER THE 2+2 ENGINEERING PROGRAM at UNCA
2+2 students begin at UNCA with normal UNCA student status.
There is no special admission process to the 2+2 Program at UNCA. Simply apply to UNCA.
However, it is important that the student state their interest in engineering
as early as possible. The ideal place to state this interest is on the UNCA admission
application, but the student can indicate the interest during orientation or
initial advising sessions as well. This will result in the appropriate assignment of
academic advisor.
Freshmen
Engineering students follow the curriculum
requirements of a generalized NCSU engineering curriculum beginning in the first semester,
freshman year. As career decisions solidify, the course of study is taylored to
the curriculum of choice. 2+2 students DO NOT follow the degree requirements for UNCA,
such as the Integrated Liberal Studies (ILS) or the Humanities (HUM) sequence.
Transfers
A student with 30+ credits of college credit applies to UNCA as a transfer student
rather than as a freshman. The student should submit a Transfer Application to UNCA.
The student will meet with the Engineering advisor to determine transfer credit and
appropriate scheduling. Students should be aware that UNCA and NCSU may evaluate
transfer courses differently. For an engineering student, the NCSU evaluation takes
precedence. For prospective students, the Engineering Advisor at UNCA is available
(and eager) to advise you prior to transfer or provide a preliminary transfer evaluation.
Non Degree Seeking Status
Under certain circumstances, it may be in the best interest of a student to apply to
UNCA as a Non Degree Seeking student. A Non Degree Seeking application form is submitted
to UNCA and the admission process is reduced and quicker than for degree seeking status.
Non Degree Seeking students are limited to 9 cr. per semester under ordinary circumstances.
See Engineering Advisor for details.
UNCA Admissions
COURSES AT OTHER INSTITUTIONS
Many courses at other institutions are equivalent to those in the engineering curricula
of NC State, but students are advised to contact the engineering advisor BEFORE enrolling
at another institution to determine transferability of specific courses.
In addition, once a student has degree seeking status at UNCA, the student must file
the UNCA form PERMISSION TO TAKE A COURSE AS A VISITOR AT ANOTHER INSTITUTION with the UNCA
Registrar.
ANOTHER SOURCE OF NCSU COURSES:
Additional distance education courses are available from
NCSU DELTA
(Distance Education and Learning Technology Applications)
OTHER 2+2 Engineering PROGRAMS
NCSU supports two other 2+2 engineering programs within North Carolina.
Both are in the eastern part of the state.
