Leonardo’s Swans
Book Reading and Signing
Hear writer Karen Essex read from her latest novel,
Leonardo’s Swans,
a vivid tale about Leonardo da Vinci’s years in Milan, when he conceived The
Last Supper and The Mona Lisa. Essex is the author of
Kleopatra and
Pharaoh, which she adapted into a screenplay for Warner Bros. She will sign
purchased copies of
Leonardo’s Swans after the reading. The Thursday,
March 16, 7 p.m. Reuter Center event, free and open to the public, is presented
by UNCA’s Department of Literature & Language and co-sponsored by the North
Carolina Center for Creative Retirement.

Health Education Series Returns for Spring
The Center’s Health Education Series offers you a chance to learn from
the experts and bring your questions to them. On Tuesday, March 28, we
host Mastering the Healthcare Maze: Patient Advocacy. The chair of
Mission Hospitals Patient and Family Centered Care Task Force, Nancy
Smith-Hunnicutt, will discuss topics of interest to individuals facing
medical challenges. On Tuesday, April 4, Dr. George Ibrahim will discuss
the latest techniques for diagnosis and treatment of prostate problems;
both men and women are invited to attend. Each discussion session is
held from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Chestnut Ridge Room of the Reuter
Center. The events are free and open to the general public. -

Lunch Arounds
Center members are invited to meet new members over a Dutch-treat lunch
at one of several local restaurants by enjoying a spring “Lunch Around.”
Several sites have been selected for lunches in March. Sign-up sheets
and specific details pertaining to each lunch date will be at the
information table in the upper level of the Reuter Center during the
week of March 20.
Great Minds/Great Ideas
The Great Minds/Great Ideas meeting, previously scheduled for February,
will now be held on Monday, March 13, at 4 p.m. New or future College
for Seniors faculty are invited to attend the meeting. Reservations are
required. Please RSVP to Anne Mock at 251-6044 or
amock@unca.edu.
Blue Ridge Naturalist Adds Spring Tree Walk and Offers Critters Class
Because of the overwhelmingly positive response, naturalist Dan Lazar
has added another Spring Tree Walk for the Blue Ridge Naturalist program
on Tuesday, May 16, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Join Dan for a walk
focusing on trees native to the Blue Ridge. The walk fee is $15. There
are also limited spaces in the Blue Ridge Naturalist’s Saturday morning
Spring Wildflowers class. Additionally, the Blue Ridge Naturalist offers
day and evening “Critter” classes, which are fun ways to learn about the
"other-than-human" species with which we share these mountains. For
course fees and more information go to
www.unca.edu/ncccr/brnp. To
register for these classes, please contact Jeanie Martin at 251-6198 or

ORIENTATION EVENTS
New Member Orientation
If you are a new Center for Creative Retirement member, we encourage you
to attend the New Member Orientation on Sunday, March 12, from 3 to 5
p.m. in the Chestnut Ridge Room at the Reuter Center. This is a great
introduction to the range of programs, activities, teaching, and
volunteer opportunities offered at the Center. You’ll also receive some
helpful, practical information relevant to Center members. Refreshments
will be served; the event is free. For more information, contact Sheila
Murphy at 645-3921.
New College for Seniors Faculty Orientation
All spring College for Seniors instructors who are teaching for the
first time in the program are invited to an orientation on Thursday,
March 9, 10:30-11:30 a.m., at the Reuter Center. The orientation will be
immediately followed by a luncheon meeting for participants.
Reservations are required. Please RSVP to Anne Mock at 251-6044 or
amock@unca.edu.
CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS
Assist with Computer Literacy Program
Are you comfortable using a computer and able to donate a few hours of
your time to assist low-income and minority seniors as they learn
beginning computer skills? The Smith Barney Intergenerational Computer
Mentoring Program needs volunteers from March 20 to April 24 to help at
any of the following times: Mondays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 11:30
a.m. and/or 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. All classes are held at the Reuter Center.
Volunteer Gail Sobel notes, “The role of the volunteer is to act as
helper to class participants.” UNCA students teach the classes and “the
volunteer keeps the participants on track, but lets them learn by
doing,” adds Sobel. Volunteers should have a good understanding of
Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Word. This computer mentoring program is
a community outreach project of the Center for Creative Retirement; it
is supported by a grant from Smith Barney/Citigroup Foundation. To
volunteer or for further information, please contact Joan Galvin at
251-6198 or
jgalvin@unca.edu.
Assist at the National Conference of Undergraduate
Research
Center members are invited to volunteer at the National Conference of
Undergraduate Research to be held April 6-8 at UNCA. Volunteers are
needed to be moderators, registration workers and campus guides. For
more information or to volunteer for any of these roles, please contact
Howard Jaslow at
innovalg@aol.com.
CENTER NEWS
Join or Start a Special Interest Group
Did you know that small groups of Center members are meeting regularly
to talk about the stock market, dine out at local restaurants, play Mah
Jongg, or quilt together in several special interest groups? We
encourage you to join one or more of the Special Interest Groups (SIGs)
at the Center. Lou Millin extends a special welcome to members who would
like to join The Forum, a SIG devoted to fostering dialogue on ideas and
events of interest. The group meets the second and fourth Fridays of
each month in the Reuter Center. For more information about The Forum,
contact Lou Millin at 298-3863 or
lmillin@bellsouth.net. To find out
more about all the Special Interest Groups, go to
www.unca.edu/ncccr/SIGs
or look at the Special Interest Groups binder on the information table
in the upper level of the Reuter Center. Additionally, if you would like
to start a new special interest group, you will find the proposal form
to do so both in the binder and online.
New Staff Members
Perien Gray and Anne Mock are new, part-time Center staff members
providing program support to the College for Seniors. Perien joins us
after volunteering as a learning circle facilitator, co-chair of the
Small Group Learning Committee, curriculum committee member, and
volunteer coordinator. Prior to joining the Center community, Perien was
a secretary, potter, musician, small business owner and organic
gardener. Anne holds a master’s degree in education and previously spent
26 years as a teacher and administrator at private elementary and
secondary schools. Three years ago, Anne and her husband moved to
Asheville from San Antonio to be near their children and grandchildren.
Anne has been a volunteer at the Center for two years.
Lunch at the Reuter Cafe
When spring term begins on March 20, the Reuter Cafe will also be back
in session from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. This is your
place for a hot or cold drink, a snack or a simple meal. We encourage
you to meet your friends, both members and non-members, at the cafe for
lunch.
Parking Plan for Spring Semester
Your access to convenient parking at the Reuter Center is important to
us. One strategy we will employ to avoid tight parking for this spring
semester is careful scheduling to avoid peak College for Seniors
enrollment periods coinciding with peak undergraduate parking
utilization. Also, we are exploring with the campus planner the
installation of a stairway between the lower Reuter Center parking lot
and the next parking level down. This would shorten the walk when Center
members must use the lower lot. Other efforts to relieve the parking
squeeze are under consideration with campus officials.
