The walk fee is $15. There are also limited spaces in the Blue Ridge Naturalist’s Saturday morning Spring Wildflowers class. CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

Assist with Computer Literacy Program

Are you comfortable using a computer and able to donate a few hours of your time to assist low-income and minority seniors as they learn beginning computer skills? The Smith Barney Intergenerational Computer Mentoring Program needs volunteers from March 20 to April 24 to help at any of the following times: Mondays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and/or 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. All classes are held at the Reuter Center. Volunteer Gail Sobel notes, “The role of the volunteer is to act as helper to class participants.” UNCA students teach the classes and “the volunteer keeps the participants on track, but lets them learn by doing,” adds Sobel. Volunteers should have a good understanding of Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Word. This computer mentoring program is a community outreach project of the Center for Creative Retirement; it is supported by a grant from Smith Barney/Citigroup Foundation. To volunteer or for further information, please contact Joan Galvin at 251-6198 or jgalvin@unca.edu.

CENTER NEWS

Join or Start a Special Interest Group

Did you know that small groups of Center members are meeting regularly to talk about the stock market, dine out at local restaurants, play Mah Jongg, or quilt together in several special interest groups? We encourage you to join one or more of the Special Interest Groups (SIGs) at the Center. Lou Millin extends a special welcome to members who would like to join The Forum, a SIG devoted to fostering dialogue on ideas and events of interest. The group meets the second and fourth Fridays of each month in the Reuter Center. For more information about The Forum, contact Lou Millin at 298-3863 or lmillin@bellsouth.net. To find out more about all the Special Interest Groups, go to www.unca.edu/ncccr/SIGs or look at the Special Interest Groups binder on the information table in the upper level of the Reuter Center. Additionally, if you would like to start a new special interest group, you will find the proposal form to do so both in the binder and online.

Lunch at the Reuter Cafe

When spring term begins on March 20, the Reuter Cafe will also be back in session from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. This is your place for a hot or cold drink, a snack or a simple meal. We encourage you to meet your friends, both members and non-members, at the cafe for lunch.

Parking Plan for Spring Semester

Your access to convenient parking at the Reuter Center is important to us. One strategy we will employ to avoid tight parking for this spring semester is careful scheduling to avoid peak College for Seniors enrollment periods coinciding with peak undergraduate parking utilization. Also, we are exploring with the campus planner the installation of a stairway between the lower Reuter Center parking lot and the next parking level down. This would shorten the walk when Center members must use the lower lot. Other efforts to relieve the parking squeeze are under consideration with campus officials.
