Bad Bugs Are We
Ready? A Talk on Pandemics June 6.
Diseases such as avian
influenza, SARS and drug-resistant tuberculosis
have dominated headlines recently. But how much do we really know? How
do these diseases spread? What measures are in place to detect, contain
or treat these diseases? Is our community ready to respond in the case
of an outbreak?
Physician Martha Salyers and veterinarian Jennifer Huffman will address
these and other questions during a talk on "Bad Bugs: Defending Against
Pandemics" at 7 p.m., Tuesday, June 6, at UNC Asheville's Reuter Center.
The event, which is free and open to the public, is part of the N.C.
Center for Creative Retirement's Health Education Series.
Naturalists
SIG.
A number of the students who
have been enrolled in the Blue Ridge Naturalist
program are interested in starting a SIG for NCCCR members who
share an interest in the natural world. An organizational meeting will
be held
on Tuesday, June 6 from 5:00 to 6:30 pm in room 206 of the Reuter
Center.
A short video on herbs for health will be shown, followed by a meeting
to
discuss what activities members would enjoy. Organizers have been
discussing
hikes, movie nights, canoe trips, etc. For more information you may
e-mail Laleah Adams at laleaha@bellsouth.net or Fred Roane at froane@hotmail.com.
Annual Meeting June 8.
The NCCCR Annual Membership
Meeting will be held on June 8 at 1:15 pm. All members are invited for a
brief review of the past year, and to cast their votes for next year’s
Center Steering Council members. Ice cream will be served!
Farmland Research Group
Seeks Community Participants June 8.
The Farmland Values Project,
a three-year research project supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture
and centered at UNC Asheville, is holding small community discussions with
residents of Buncombe, Haywood, Madison and Henderson counties. The project
hopes to meet with
members of these four counties to record their thoughts about ways that local
farmland contributes to their lives and communities. The group is especially
interested in people who have moved to western NC to retire.
Information and opinions from these meetings will be combined with other data to
guide decisions about farmland use in rural communities.
The next meeting will be held from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 8th, on
the UNCA campus. If you are interested in participating, please contact Daniel
O’Leary by phone at 828/250-3866 or by e-mail at doleary@unca.edu.
