Shakespeare’s R&J at the North Carolina Stage Company

Join with your Reuter Center friends to see the Sunday, April 23, matinee performance of Shakespeare’s R & J by the North Carolina Stage Company. The performance is from 2-4 p.m. at the stage company’s theatre at 33 Haywood Street in downtown Asheville. Tickets are $15 per person. Tickets are now on sale at the reception desk in the Reuter Center, Room 208. Purchase your tickets soon because space is limited.

Shakespeare R & J performersShakespeare's R&J features a strikingly minimal set, fast pacing, and the beauty of Shakespeare's original language. Wildly successful Off-Broadway, the New York Times raved "...this vibrant, hot-blooded new adaptation pulsates with an adolescent abandon and electricity of which Romeo himself might approve." Don’t miss this opportunity to experience quality theater.

Forum on Illegal Immigration

Center members are invited to attend a Tuesday, April 25, forum on illegal immigration. Keynote speaker at the event is Hiroshi Motomura (shown right), Kenan Distinguished Professor and associate dean for faculty affairs at the School of Law, UNC Chapel Hill. Mark Gibney, Belk Distinguished Professor and political science professor at UNCA, is the event respondent. Keynote speaker Motomura has served as co-counsel or a volunteer consultant in several recent immigration cases in the U.S. Supreme Court, as well in immigration cases in the federal appeals courts. He is a past member of the American Bar Association's Commission on Immigration, a current member of the Commission’s Advisory Committee, and the Chair-Elect of the Immigration Law Section of the Association of American Law Schools.

This event is co-sponsored by Leadership Asheville Seniors and the NC Center for Creative Retirement. The free event is held from 7-9 p.m. in the Chestnut Ridge Room of the Reuter Center.

CENTER NEWS

Rosen’s Rascals Tap On

Rosen’s Rascals, a 15-member group of tap and soft shoe dancers, is one of three Center for Creative Retirement performance groups. These troupers recently lost their long-time teacher and mentor, Dorothy Rosen, but they continue to practice weekly and perform at area nursing homes and for senior and church groups. The Rascals also perform at Reuter Center events and special events in and around Asheville. Rosen's Rascals

The Rascals have been performing for 12 years, and Dorothy Rosen had an amazingly long 13-and-a-half-year run as tap class instructor for the College for Seniors. Line Captain Lois Butler notes, “Dorothy was an inspiring teacher and did a great job leading the group all these years. We have a group of dedicated members who are working hard to keep the Rascals performing.” To honor Dorothy’s memory, the Rascals recently made a donation to the Center that was used to purchase a new wireless lapel microphone for College for Seniors classes.

New Staff Member

Welcome to Patti Cameron our new, part-time staff member. Currently, Patti is conducting a research study of the Center’s volunteer program with the goal to identify what we are doing well and make suggestions on needed improvements. Patti’s responsibilities will soon shift to program coordinator for Leadership Training for Older Persons. Some members may know Patti from her previous role as Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) Coordinator at the Land-of-Sky Regional Council. Patti has enjoyed working in the non-profit field for over 10 years and looks forward to the new challenges, learning opportunities and friendships to be made through the Center. Patti holds a bachelor’s degree from Trent University in Ontario, where she had double majors in comparative development studies and international politics. She is working towards a certificate in non-profit management from Duke University.

Please Limit Your Perfume and Cologne

Be kind to your fellow class participants by limiting perfume, cologne, and other scented products at the Reuter Center. Studies have shown that exposure to fragrances can cause shortness of breath and asthma-like symptoms, trigger migraine headaches, induce dizziness, and make concentration difficult. Most fragrances consist of chemicals that are volatile organic compounds, which are known to be respiratory irritants.
