Have you noticed the blue ribbon on the bulletin board at the Reuter Center? The UNCA Smooth Dancers, led by Bruce and Carol Peterson, won that blue ribbon in the Adult Division of Smooth Dancing at the WNC Mountain State Fair. The team of 20 dancers was formed 3 ½ years ago after taking a class on Mountain Musical Heritage taught by Jo Herron. Congratulations to the group and happy dancing at the next stop: the state fair in Raleigh in October.
Kathleen Davis, director of
community and special publications at the Asheville Citizen-Times,
will be the presenter at the October 27 TGIF Lunch. This will give
you an excellent opportunity to learn more about these publications
and how you can have a say in what’s included. Ms. Davis will be
happy to entertain any questions you have on the special
publications as well as the entire newspaper.
Guillermo Perich who was originally scheduled for the October 27
TGIF Lunch has had to postpone his performance because of pending
surgery.
Special Interest Groups (SIGs) are thriving at the Reuter
Center. SIGs are member-led activities around a mutual interest.
Members should feel free to “check out” any SIG of interest or
to contact a SIG “champion.” Here are a few tidbits of
information.
Among other events, the Wild Bunch SIG embarks on nature-based
outings such as birding trips, fall leaf and nature hikes, plant
swaps, alternative living methods, old growth forests, river
canoe and kayak trips, and other events suggested and led by the
membership. Contact Fred Roane froane@hotmail.com
The Tile Clickers SIG is always anxious to have new members. We
welcome "watchers" who would like to learn to play Mah Jongg.
Contact Shirley Rardin tsrardin@charter.net
Contract Bridge SIG meets every Friday at 2 pm in the Atrium.
Intermediate level -- Chicago style scoring. Contact Marge
Campbell (254-3354) www.marge1.1@juno.com
Duplicate Bridge SIG meets 1st, 3rd, and 5th Mondays at 3 pm in
the Atrium. Good opportunity to compare your bridge skills with
others in an informal, friendly atmosphere. Contact Marge
Campbell (254-3354) www.marge1.1@juno.com
The Singles SIG will meet on Wednesday, October 4 for dinner at
the UNCA Dining Room (private dining room at the rear, right
side). On Wednesday, October 18 the group will meet for dinner
at a local restaurant (TBA). Contact Elaine Price eprice5089@charter.net
Our newest SIG is Creating Community in the 2nd Half of Life.
This SIG explores how relationships and community affect life as
we age. The group will explore how relationships are created,
nurtured, and expanded and the effect of community wherever it
is. SIG members will choose specific topics for reading and
discussion such as "intentional neighborhoods" in the Asheville
and Western NC areas, aging concerns and benefits of community.
The first two meetings are Wednesday, October 25, 6-7:30 pm and
Thursday, October 16, 6-7:30 pm in room 205. Contact Marianne Kilkenny (230-2093) mk@mekilkenny.com
