Late summer in WNC brings warm temperatures and rainy days, which create the
perfect conditions for a diverse display of fungi. Join nurseryman and mushroom
expert Ken Crouse for a foray into the woods to seek out these earthy treasures.
Many delicious and edible species of mushrooms might be growing right outside
your door providing you with both food and medicine. You will learn how to
create a spore print, how to identify different species of mushrooms and where
they grow.
COMMUNES FOR GROWNUPS CONFERENCE
The Center’s first foray into exploring housing options for midlife and older adults seems to have struck a chord since over 100 people are registered for the July 28 conference, “Creating Intentional Communities in the Second Half of Life.” The event highlights alternative housing models that emphasize community and mutual support. Leading experts from around the country will discuss concepts such as co-housing, Eldershires, Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORCs), and non-denominational spiritual communities. The sessions will explore practical steps for creating these “communes for grown ups” as well as critical issues of cost, compatibility, and supportive care.Beginning this fall, a new series will be inaugurated at
the Reuter Center in photography, the fine arts and crafts. The Studio
Masters Series, for persons with intermediate and advanced skills
seeking to further their artistic expertise, will feature recognized
professionals in their respective arts disciplines. Studio Masters
Series will be offered on weekday evenings and weekends.
Opening the fall series are plein air painter, Julyan Davis, whose work
spans realism and impressionism, and commercial and fine art
photographer, Tim Barnwell. Davis will instruct participants in a
workshop entitled “Modern Landscape Painting: New and Traditional
Painterly Technique” on Sept 8-9, 9 am-4 pm (with lunch break).
Barnwell’s program “Developing a Personal Photographic Portfolio,” will
meet Tuesdays, 6-8 pm, Oct 10-Nov 14.
Julyan Davis’ work has recently been exhibited at the Blue Spiral 1
Gallery in Asheville. He is an English-born realist painter who has
recently explored aspects of modernism in his work. Cezanne, Bonnard and
Friedrich are his major influences. Davis studied painting and
printmaking at Byam Shaw School of Art, London. His work is exhibited in
galleries in London and stateside from Maine to Florida.
Tim Barnwell’s 25-year career as professional photographer and
photography instructor includes 8 years as executive director of the
nationally recognized Appalachian Photographic Workshops. His images
have appeared in many publications, and his prints are in the permanent
collections of numerous museums. His second book, On Earth’s Furrowed
Brow: The Appalachian Farm in Photographs is forthcoming in early 2007.
Registrations for Studio Masters Series are being accepted now. Class
sizes are limited; early registration is advised. For full details,

Come to the New Member Orientation on Sunday, September 10, 1-3 pm. This is a great way to meet with other members, both new and “seasoned,” and to learn the finer details of Reuter Center activities and opportunities. We especially encourage those who are new for the summer or fall terms to attend but all are welcomed.
WHO IS THAT YOUNG FACE AT THE RECEPTION DESK?
Mary Gwen Kistler, a junior at UNCA majoring in literature with K-6 teaching licensure, has been working at the reception desk at the Reuter Center this summer while taking two classes in summer school. Raised in Raleigh, Mary Gwen enjoys the mountains surrounding Asheville and opportunities to go camping and hiking. She has taught in the Center’s computer literacy program since her freshman year. Stop by to meet her when you can and enjoy her delightful smile and sense of humor.
LEADERSHIP TRAINING FOR OLDER PERSONS
Something very special is about to happen at the NC Center
for Creative Retirement. People are empowered, friendships are
forged, and communities are changed forever through Leadership
Training for Older Persons (LTOP). The program is made possible,
in part, through a gift from the Leadership Asheville Forum.
LTOP is a practical leadership course that mixes education,
group discussions, peer mentoring and service projects to help
people gain the skills and confidence to become leaders in our
community. This year a group of 28 diverse individuals and
mentors will gather every Wednesday from August 9th through
September 13th on a new journey of leadership. They are aged 49
to 82, from different education levels, professions, and social
backgrounds. The one thing these individuals have in common is
the desire to see the WNC community flourish as it changes. For
more information on LTOP or how to become an LTOP mentor, please
contact Patti Cameron at 250-3871 or at pcameron@unca.edu
You will find new opportunities to enhance your mental, physical and spiritual well-being in the Center’s intergenerational health and fitness initiative. New this fall—an eight-week course on “How to Use a Fitness Center.” Topics include anatomy and nutrition in addition specific instruction on using exercise equipment. Participants will learn about both UNCA and other fitness facilities in the area and will be invited to participate in UNCA intergenerational outdoor activities. Continuing this fall—an opportunity to join the UNCA Health and Fitness Center as long as you are enrolled in any for-fee program at the Center for Creative Retirement. Further details are in the fall catalog.
It's for you - and it's free! Center members who would like to consider teaching in the College for Seniors, or who are already teaching and want to pick up additional techniques to use with adult learners, are invited to register for this course offered only once a year. You'll get pointers on learning styles, ways to engage participants in lively discussions, course planning, proposal-writing, and more. Watch for it in your fall catalog.
We have received news that members Alan Singleton and Eric Shepherd Johnson recently died. We send our condolences to their families and friends.
ALAN SINGLETON MEMORIAL FUND
Alan Singleton, who was the Center’s volunteer webmaster for many years and chair-elect of the Center Steering Council, died on June 30 after a brief illness. To honor him and his many contributions to lifelong learning, leadership and community service, his family has established a fund in Alan's memory at the Center for Creative Retirement. Those who would like to remember Alan in this way can contribute by making a check payable to the UNCA Foundation and sending it to NCCCR Memorial, Reuter Center CPO #5000, UNCA, Asheville NC 28804. Donations can also be dropped off at the reception desk, Reuter Center room 208.
UNCA will install Anne Ponder as its sixth chancellor on September 15, 2006.
