Have Your Registered?

Registration for winter classes and programs continues. You can walk-in or mail-in your requests. Remember that the Reuter Center will be closed from December 21-January 1.

Winter Orientation and New Member Welcome

All are welcomed but new members are especially encouraged to attend the orientation and welcome event on Friday, January 12, 10-noon, in Room 102. Here’s a chance to meet and mingle as well as to learn details of the Reuter Center offerings and opportunities. In the case of inclement weather, the orientation will be postponed to Sunday, January 14, 2-4 pm.

Patio Pavers

Last year friends and supporters of the Reuter Center purchased engraved paver bricks honoring and remembering friends and family. At long last, the pavers are installed. Enjoy the winter sun with stroll on the south patio to view the new pavers and see if you know any of those who are honored.

Farewell, Barb Terry

Barb Terry has been our facility manager for the last year and a half. She has scheduled your rooms and kept the audio-visual equipment in order. She has moved the Chestnut Ridge Room wall and the piano dozens of times and set up chairs and tables by the hundreds. She has kept the plants watered, the coffee pots full and the building secure. Best of all, she has blessed us with her ready smile, cheerful approach to every situation and calm attention to important details. We will miss her as she moves to her new position in the Payroll Office at UNCA.

Patti Cameron will be handling the room scheduling on an interim basis. Recently Patti has coordinated the Smith Barney Intergenerational Computer Mentoring and Leadership Training for Older Persons programs.

A Perfect Gift?

Want to honor a friend or surprise a neighbor with something special? Consider a North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement gift certificate now available at the Reuter Center ($25 minimum, please).

Open Positions

Do you know someone who would love to work at the Reuter Center? Currently some staff positions are open. If you or someone you know is interested, go to http://www.unca.edu/hr/jobs.html for more information.

Upgrading Your Computer and Need a Home for Your Older Model?

The Smith Barney Intergenerational Computer classes held twice a year at the Reuter Center provide low-income older adults basic instruction in word processing and Internet skills. Once the class ends, many of the participants do not have reliable access to a computer on a regular basis. The Community Outreach Committee hopes to make a difference—with you help. If you are upgrading your computer and are interested in donating the older model that is working well, please contact Sheila Murphy at 828-645-3921 or murphysh@verizon.net

Interested in What Goes On at Committee Meetings?

Committee minutes are now available on the web. Check it out at:  http://www.unca.edu/ncccr/CSC/mtg_docs/Minutes/index.htm

Opportunity to Enhance Your Skills in Leading a Class in Guided Autobiography

James E. Birren, gerontologist and founder of Guided Autobiography, and Cheryl Svensson, gerontologist and psychologist, will present a free workshop in Hendersonville. A maximum of 30 prospective course leaders will be accepted for the full day Guided Autobiography training program on December 12; pre-registration is required. The training is provided through a grant from the American Society on Aging, but as follow-up, each prospective course leader is asked to commit to train 8-10 older adults using Guided Autobiography. Those interested can pick up information at the reception desk of the Reuter Center.
