Bernie Arghiere

“Bernie” is passionate about sharing the amazing wonders of the night sky.  In 2007 he began teaching a fall-term course on observing the night sky at the College for Seniors.

Bernie has been studying the day and nighttime skies and using telescopes since 1972.  He has traveled worldwide chasing astronomical events.  He has observed transits of both Venus and Mercury as well as total solar and lunar eclipses.  He has also traveled to the southern hemisphere to observe the spectacular night skies below the equator.

Bernie has designed and built his own observatory, and he is currently working on the plans and construction for 2 other observatories in western North Carolina.  He is a member of the Astronomy Club of Asheville, the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, and the International Dark-Sky Association.

Bernie moved to Asheville in 1992 with his wife and 2 sons.  Though his professional background is in accounting and financial software development, his life’s passions have led him to exploring woodland trails and the heavens above, and to immersing himself in many aspects of the natural world.
