Tim Barnwell
Biography
Tim Barnwell, nationally-recognized commercial and fine art photographer has
enjoyed a 25 year career as professional photographer and photography instructor
that includes 8 years as executive director of the nationally recognized school,
Appalachian Photographic Workshops.
During his tenure he taught and coordinated workshops with visiting master
photographers including
Cole Weston,
Ernst Hass, George Tice, Galen Rowell, Freeman Patterson, Jerry Uelsmann, Robert
Farber,
John Shaw, Sonja Bullaty &Angelo Lomzo, and
Art Wolfe. His images have been widely published,
appearing in dozens of magazines including, Aperture, Time, Newsweek,
Southern Accents, House Beautiful, American Craft, Sky and Telescope, Outdoor
Photographer, Billboard, U.S. News and World Report, Travel South, Astronomy,
USAir, American Style, Blue Ridge Country, National Parks, Wildlife in North
Carolina, Black and White Magazine, and Photography in New York.
His fine art has been included in 65 group and one-man shows since 1977 both in the U.S.
and abroad; his prints are in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan
Museum, the New Orleans Museum of Art, Atlanta’s High Museum, the Mint Museum in
Charlotte, SOHO Photo Gallery in New York, the Asheville Art Museum and various
corporations and universities.
Barnwell’s book, The Face of Appalachia: Portraits from the Mountain Farm was
published by W.W. Norton& Co. / New York in 2003. A second book, On Earth’s Furrowed Brow is
forthcoming in early
2007.
