MLA Workshops
The MLA
Program will be offering a number of workshops for MLA students this year.
Email announcements will be sent for each session. The first workshop,
"Writing at the Graduate Level," was held on Saturday, October 17, and was a
great success. Workshop notes from the instructors, Eileen Crowe and
Michael Gillum, are available for download:

Procedures
Tutorials
Students may take up
to two tutorials (MLA 610) in fulfillment of elective credit with the
permission of the instructor and the program director. Each tutorial is
offered as a 3 credit hour course. A
Tutorial
Proposal Application (click to download
PDF) must be submitted to the program director one week prior to the
registration period for the semester.
Transfer Credits
Students may transfer up to six semester
hours from other accredited graduate programs, provided that the work is
relevant to the MLA program and the student earned a grade of B- or better
in each course, by petitioning the Graduate Council, which will review
requests. Transfer credit will be applied toward electives only. Continuing
students considering a course through another institution are encouraged to
discuss the course with the program director before enrolling if the aim is
to earn credit towards the MLA degree.
Advising
Each student will consult with the program
director for orientation and advising before beginning graduate course work.
Students are expected to maintain contact with a designated graduate advisor
to insure progress through the program.
Progress
It
is expected that a student will need no more than five years to complete the
MLA degree. Permission of the Graduate Council is necessary in order to
remain a candidate for the degree beyond this time limit. Students must
complete at least one MLA course per year and maintain regular contact with
their assigned graduate advisors in order to remain candidates for the
degree.

Withdrawal
A student may withdraw officially from the program at
any time, following consultation with his or her graduate advisor. If a
student has not been in attendance for one full calendar year, he or she
will be dismissed automatically from the program. Reinstatement requires
permission of the Graduate Council.
Accreditation
The University of North Carolina at
Asheville is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern
Association of Colleges and Schools to award the Master's Degree. UNC
Asheville is also a full member of the Association of Graduate Liberal
Studies Programs.
