Admissions

Non-degree Seeking/Graduate Special

Important Information:

Persons with a baccalaureate degree who wish to take graduate courses, but have no clear intention of obtaining a degree, may be admitted to the University as a Graduate Special (non-degree seeking)Student.

At the discretion of the Program Director, graduate special students may take up to six credit hours of graduate courses each semester for credit.  Admission as a graduate special student does not of itself constitute regular admission to the MLA Program.  Financial Aid is not available to non-degree seeking students.

If a student taking courses as a Graduate Special wishes to apply for matriculation as a Degree-Seeking student, they must submit an application for admission into the MLA program as outlined for Degree-Seeking candidates. If accepted into the MLA program, successfully completed MLA courses taken as a Graduate Special may be applied to completion of the MLA degree at the discretion of the Graduate Council. For further information, please call the MLA Program office at (828) 250-2399.

All applicants for admission as MLA Graduate Special candidates must submit:

  • A completed MLA Graduate Special application form (click to download PDF);
  • An essay of 500-700 words on one of the topics provided on the application form;
  • An application fee of $50 payable to UNC Asheville. This is a non-refundable processing charge and does not apply to any other University fee;
  • Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work previously undertaken;

    The application form and supporting materials should be sent to the MLA Program Office, UNC Asheville, CPO 1615, One University Heights, Asheville, NC 28804.  Applications are accepted on a space-available basis until the first week of class each semester.

    Interview

    In addition to these requirements, the Program Director must also interview each candidate for Graduate Special status.  After all required materials have been received, the Program Director will contact the applicant to schedule an interview.

    Re-Application

    A Graduate Special Student who does not does not maintain continuous enrollment by taking at least one course each semester will have to re-apply, using the same form, and be approved by the program Director before taking further classes.  The application fee of $50.00 must be paid again.
