The Ernest Mills Memorial Scholarship

Customer Satisfaction, U.S. Army Special Forces

Why this scholarship was established

This endowment was established in 1988 by Mr. George G. Harris a longtime friend and business associate of Mr. Ernest Mills, and twelve other friends and business associates. In his letter establishing the endowment, Mr. Harris stated that "Ernest Mills of Mills Manufacturing Company, Asheville, North Carolina, was a man who exemplified the highest ethical standards. His thoughtfulness of others and praise for his family were immense. As a businessman, he was unique. He was most knowledgeable about all business and economic matters. Above all, he was honest and was an expert in his field of being the largest single producer of parachutes for the United States and the Free World. This endowment that honors Mr. Mills and all the principles that he exemplified was established to provide assistance to deserving students majoring in business, economics, and management.

Criteria for award

Applications and/or recommendations are to be submitted to the Department of Management and Accountancy prior to February 15 of the preceding academic year. The scholarship may be renewed. Selection is based upon the following criteria:

  • Declared major in the Department of Economics and/or Management and Accountancy
  • demonstrate academic merit
  • demonstrate financial need

Selection Process

A department selection committee will recommend a candidate or candidates (depending on the number of available scholarships) to the full-time department faculty for approval. The name or names of the candidate or candidates nominated for the scholarship will then be forwarded to the Office of Financial Aid by the Chair of the Department of Management and Accountancy. The Office of Financial Aid will make the final decision on awarding the scholarship.
