Abstract:
The 2008 presidential campaign has started. Seemingly, every day the list of hopefuls from each party is growing; these lists will be narrowed during the primary season. But, to raise a troubling question, will the winners be who the voters really wanted? The odds are against it. In this general audience, expository talk, I will identify the culprit for this problem, and then I will show how the difficulty can be resolved. As a warning, expect to leave the talk worrying about the outcome of your last election, whether it was for the choice of pizza, electing the chair for an academic department or social group, or even with the choice of a most valuable player.
