Axioms Mathematics is the study of relations between objects. At the lower level, this includes recognizing patterns, sequencing events and the concrete ideas of set and number. At a higher level this includes the abstraction of earlier concepts as well as logic, statistics, estimating and mathematical modeling. . . More. . .

Free Math Education Programs The cool site wearing a dull mask is the National Library of Virtual Manipulatives These are free java programs designed to teach and reinforce math skills. The target audience is all kids K-12, but college students and parents would enjoy this site, too. More. . .

Cyberchase Rocks A popular PBS kids show is Cyberchase. In each epsiode, three friends enter a virtual world and have to out think the bad guy, Hacker, using math skills. On the show's website, at "Games Central" is a great collection of math games. More. . .

North Carolina Standard Course of Study Usually, a list of standards of what math to study in each grade is a dry heap of paper. If that is all that were there, the North Carolina Standard Course of Study would be a downloadable heap of dull lists. However, unlike most official documents, the NC Standards has sample activities with each aspect of the curriculum. More. . .

The Problem The National Alliance of State Science and Mathematics Coalitions cites the following statistics:

  • Only 40% of American workers have the technical skills and understanding required by employers.
  • U.S. Business spends $62 billion per year to upgrade basic skills.
  • More. . .

A Solution Exists Establish a local project that:

  • Provides a basic information clearinghouse for students, teachers, parents and citizens on what resources are available to them for personal and professional development.
  • Facilitates dissemination of effective curriculum and structural enhancements between math educators at all levels.
  • More
