Personal statement:

As a writing teacher, I think it is important to help students recognize their own unique

voice. Whether working on an academic research essay or an original short story,

individuality and point of view are what bond writers with an audience.

As a working writer, I also hope students understand that I encounter the same situations

they face trying to translate ideas and emotions into words. Writing is never easy, but

the practice of writing allows each of us an opportunity to connect with our individual

experience and the world around us - discovering meaning through observation and

reflection.
