The University of North Carolina offers both a major and minor in International Studies, allowing undergraduates to pursue an interdisciplinary understanding of modern world affairs. The purpose of the International Studies program is provide students with a greater knowledge of and appreciation for diverse cultural, economic and political systems worldwide. The International Studies program is of value to students seeking careers in a number of fields, such as government, business, environmental studies, law, journalism and teaching. It provides an excellent background for those interested in working for government agencies, non-governmental organizations such as the United Nations, and private voluntary and humanitarian organizations.
International Studies at UNCA emphasizes global awareness and global citizenship as essential aspects of a liberal arts education. Students select from many courses and disciplines that complement the university's liberal arts emphasis: modern foreign languages, humanities, the arts, and the natural and social sciences. International Studies majors choose a special area of emphasis depending on their interest: Society and Culture, International Law and Human Rights, or Trade and Development. Participating faculty in the International Studies program teach courses from a range of disciplines. They are engaged in scholarship and research, as well as service-learning partnerships both locally and internationally.
