Organized by the Adelaide Daniels Key Center for Community Citizenship and Service Learning, 600 + new UNC Asheville freshmen fan out into our area to help in myriad ways such as building, renovating and painting houses, cleaning up streets, parks and waterways, mentoring and tutoring in schools and lots more. Free Noontime Concert ~
Special guest jazz guitarist Bob DeVos joins UNCA music students and faculty for this celebratory music event. (Co-sponsored by UNCA Cultural & Special Events). Lipinsky Auditorium (LH)

DeVos is currently on the faculty of Leigh University and is an active member of the NYC jazz scene. He has played in countless ensembles and jazz orchestras throughout his career and his many recordings have earned rave reviews. Bob has played the Kennedy Center, The Blue Note, Birdland, Iridium and numerous festivals all over the country. Click here for more on DeVos.

Campus “Green Buildings” and Sustainable Design Tour ~
Meet your team of
tour guides from
UNC Asheville's Office of Design and Construction in the lobby of New Hall. This walking tour of campus projects includes several "green" buildings and landscapes designed to comply with the principles of economic, social, and ecological sustainability.

The Botanical Gardens at Asheville tour
Meet your tour guides in the main Botanical Gardens offices, near the corner of W.T. Weaver Boulevard and Broadway. Enjoy a leisurely stroll to see what's blooming in the late summer native gardens, immediately adjacent to the UNC Asheville campus. Parking is available in the Gardens' parking lot on W.T. Weaver Boulevard.

Multimedia Arts & Sciences Exhibition Reception ~ Please join us for light refreshments and see highlights of MMAS student art work. This exhibit showcases excellent work from previous MMAS student exhibitions featuring 2D and 3D animation, video, interactive design, digital art prints and more. The exhibit is on view from 1-6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11, and 9 a.m.-6 p.m. September 12-15.

Art Reception~School of Athens wall mural and Selected Student Artwork

Join us for light dessert refreshments and a "working exhibit" of the School of Athens wall mural currently being completed for the Highsmith University Union by UNC Asheville faculty, students and community members. In addition, visit the open of our annual Selected Student Artwork show in the Highsmith Gallery. This exhibit showcases exceptional works of art by students. The exhibit was curated by Art Department faculty. Music provided by the Free Range Trio.

Mountain Picnic*~ Immediately following the Installation ceremony, join the campus community, families and guests under the big tent on the Mini-Quad just behind Ramsey Library for a lovely outdoor buffet and celebration. Just follow the sounds of Whitewater Bluegrass Company who’ll be providing live music. Dinner is served from 5-7:30 pm on the New Hall Mini-Quad. Free to all. Rain location: Dining Hall

In accordance with the university’s efforts to promote a sustainable environment, the disposable tableware, utensils and cups used for the Mountain Picnic are made of compostable, biodegradable materials. These include sugar cane waste pulp, cornstarch and derivatives of corn grown in the USA. The 1,500 disposables used at the event are expected to biodegrade within 180 days in a commercial composting facility.
