Topical Clusters

Topical Clusters bring the perspectives of several different disciplines to bear on a particular issue or subject area. Students are required to complete one Topical Cluster, consisting of at least three courses, for a total of 9 credit hours or more. No more than 3 of the 9 credit hours a student applies toward the Topical Cluster may have the same course prefix. Of these courses, one must be designated as ILS Social Science (ILSS) and one as ILS Natural Science (ILSN); to complete the cluster, then, a student will need to take a third course, with a third prefix. An ILS Arts (ILSA) course may be taken within the Topical Cluster, but it is not required. Students are invited to take more than the required 9 hours. If students choose to do so, they may take additional courses from any listed in the Topical Cluster.

Students are responsible for ensuring that they choose the correct section of a course. When the cluster has been chosen, students must fill out a Cluster Declaration Form. Courses fulfilling major requirements may appear as part of a cluster. If you are interested in joining a cluster or developing a new Topical Cluster Theme you can find out how here.
