What are the humanities?

n. pl. hu·man·i·ties

  1. The languages and literatures of ancient Greece and Rome; the classics.

  2. Those branches of knowledge, such as philosophy, literature, and art, that are concerned with human thought and culture; the liberal arts.

n : studies intended to provide general knowledge and intellectual skills (rather than occupational or professional skills); "the college of arts and sciences"

In other words, the humanities are studies of the human experience, and look at the aspects of life that are uniquely human.  These include history, language, literature, philosophy, religion, and the arts, among others.

Why study the humanities?

Like many students, you probably plan to attend college so that you can find a good job after graduation.  By studying the humanities, you can add an additional dimension to this goal.  In addition to the technical skills that college provides, as a student of the humanities, you can acquire a better understanding of the context in which you live.  You can gain insights into who you are, where you came from, and where you are going as a member of society.  At the same time, you are gaining valuable analysis and critical thinking skills, intellectual experience in a wide range of topics, and an ability to see humanity from a larger perspective.

What is the Humanities Student Association?

The Humanities Student Association is a student run organization interested in exploring the humanities above and beyond the scope of the curriculum offered at UNCA.  We offer opportunities to investigate humanities resources both on campus and in the surrounding community.  We do this by inviting guest speakers, performers, or exhibits to UNCA, by arranging field trips to events outside of campus, and by encouraging UNCA faculty to share their special areas of interest.

Membership is free, and students from all disciplines are welcome.

The purpose of the HSA is to provide student members with the structure, the means to organize, and the forum for exploration of humanities-related topics outside of the classroom context and Humanities Program course structure.
