Important Notice Regarding Changes in Residence Hall Access (back to top of page)

*Reminder:  these changes do go into effect during Thanksgiving Break, which begins on Wednesday, November 21 at 9:00 AM.  The Residence Halls will reopen on Sunday, November 25 at 9:00 AM

Dear Resident Students:

As your semester winds down and you look forward to the upcoming breaks, we wanted to make you aware of some changes around the residence halls that will go into effect over Thanksgiving Break and will impact you upon your return to campus.

We are continuously looking at ways to improve the quality of life for residential students and improve the security and comfort of the living/learning environments we offer at UNC Asheville.

When students return from Thanksgiving Break on Sunday, November 25 you will notice the following changes related to accessing the residence halls.

  1. The first change is in the entry to Governors Hall

    • Entering Governors Hall will still take place through the same four (4) doors that students currently use.  One is located at the 2nd floor lobby under the clock tower, one is located at the 1st floor elevator lobby near the soccer field, and two are located at each end of the 2nd floor breezeway.  However, the change will be that each of these doors will remain locked 24 hours a day and can be opened only by entering a touch code into the key pad located on the door.  Governors Hall residents will receive the building entry code by coming to the Offices of Residential Education and Housing Operations between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM, Monday-Friday or Campus Police after hours.  You MUST bring your OneCard to receive the code.  It is the responsibility of the Governors Hall residents not to share the code with non Governors Hall residents.

  2. The second impacts the entrance into West Ridge, South Ridge, Mills Hall and Founders Hall.

    • Entry to West Ridge, South Ridge, Mills Hall and Founders Hall will be possible only through the main entrance to each building 24 hours a day.  All other exterior doors will be appropriately labeled and alarmed to help prevent propping or unauthorized entry into the building.

While these changes do enhance access control and security within the residence halls, each resident is equally responsible for helping to maintain a safe and comfortable environment in your residential community.  If you have additional ideas, questions, or concerns please contact the Office of Residential Education and Housing Operations at 251-6700 or reslife@unca.edu.

FROM:                  Office of Residential Life and Housing Operations

DATE:                    November 1, 2007 (Flyers went to all mailboxes on Nov 1st)

If you cannot find the Cancellation Request in your on campus mailbox, you may download it here.

TERMS OF THE HOUSING CONTRACT AND CANCELLATION REQUESTS:

To help with your planning, we are reminding current resident students and their parents of the terms of the year-long housing contract.

Please be aware the UNC Asheville housing contract states: “The term of this contract is for one academic year consisting of two semesters, from the first day of fall semester to the last day of spring semester, or for an alternate period beginning sometime after fall semester begins and terminating at the end of spring semester.”  Some off-campus housing businesses may aggressively solicit students to break their year-long housing contracts and move into off-campus housing.

The UNC Asheville housing contract has no provision for resident students moving off campus mid-year, with the exception of a few valid reasons, and documentation must be provided.  These reasons include:

  1. The student is required to move from the Asheville area while student teaching or involved in other field work (includes internship and Study Abroad program).

  2. The student graduates, withdraws or transfers from UNC Asheville.

  3. There are medical reasons approved by the Director of Student Health Services.**

  4. The student is academically ineligible to return to UNC Asheville.

  5. The student is getting married prior to or during spring semester.

If you will not be returning to the residence halls next semester based on one of the above reasons, please mark the appropriate space below and return the form, with any necessary supporting documentation to the Office of Residential Education and Housing Operations in Governors Hall by 4:00 PM on Monday, November 26, 2007.  By doing so, you will officially cancel your room assignment for spring semester.  Your housing deposit refund will be credited to your student account after you have properly checked out of your room at the end of fall semester.  Allow 4-6 weeks for housing deposit refund processing.

  • If you are approved to cancel for a valid reason but do not return this form by November 26, 2007 you will automatically forfeit your housing deposit.

  • If you are not approved to cancel for a valid reason and move out of your residence hall room, you will be billed for your room and meal plan for spring semester 2008.

  • If you have questions about room cancellation, please call 251.6700 or e-mail reslife@unca.edu.

ROOM CHANGES:

Room change requests will be approved Wednesday, November 28, from 8:30–11:30 AM at the Offices of Residential Education and Housing Operations in Governors Hall and will be honored on a first come basis.  Approved changes must be completed before you leave for the holiday break, or they are voided.

**If you are deciding to cancel your housing contract for Medical reasons, please be advised that you must provide documentation from your physician that answers the following questions:

  1. Why is it medically necessary for (this student) to be released from the housing contract?

  2. What is your medical diagnosis

  3. What has changed about (this student’s) medical condition since s/he began living on campus?

  4. What is your prognosis?

  5. Any additional information to support (this student’s) request to be released from the housing contract.

Return form and documentation to Jackie McHargue, Dean of Students, Governors Hall 270 by 4:00 p.m. on Monday, 11.26.2007

  2. do not leave water running while brushing teeth, shaving, soaping hands, or washing dishes

The winner of the fall 2007 UNCA Green Games is.....(drum roll)..... (back to top of page)

GOVERNORS VILLAGE!

The residents of Governor's Village narrowly pulled ahead of West Ridge in this semester's energy-saving competition. Governors Village reduced their energy consumption by a remarkable 43%!

The break-down of the residence halls is as follows:
1. Governors Village (saved 43% of energy relative to consumption of the previous week)
2. West Ridge (saved 37%)
3. Mills (saved 23%)
4. Governors Hall (increased 5%)
5. Founders (increased 17%)
6. South Ridge (increased 37%)

Electric and gas meters were checked the week before Greenfest and the week of Greenfest to get relative measurements for each residence hall.

Thanks to everyone who participated in this biannual event by reducing our campus energy consumption! It is important to remember, as energy efficiency and the effect of greenhouse gases on our globe is in the news, that cutting our energy use should be something we practice all year, not just for a week.

Energy Saving Tips:
Replace your incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescents (CFLs) Turn off lights and computer when not in your room Keep your windows shut when heating/air conditioning is running--call maintenance if your thermostat doesn't work Use your OneCard for FREE Asheville Transit bus rides, and avoid the headache and expense of driving and parking around town.

Thanks again,

*ASHE meets weekly Thursday nights at 6:30pm in Highsmith room 104.
Please feel free to join us anytime!

Green Games Start October 22nd! (back to top of page)

It's that time again!

Green Games Fall 2007 is going down next week: October 22nd-26th.   Time to show your love to mother earth, and help your residence hall win a chocolate fountain party and raffle for prizes.  Mills and South Ridge have been our previous champions:  who will be next?  The residence hall with the largest percent reduction in energy consumption for the week of October 22nd-26th will be the winner.

Did you know that a large portion of tuition and dorm fees go to energy bills?  Break the cycle!  Here's some tips to win: don't leave your computer running when you're not around to use it.  Turn lights off in study lounges.  Wash your clothes in cold water (the bright colors setting) and let your clothes (and hair) air dry!

So basically, do what you can to save energy in your residence hall, and your building could be the next Green Games winner.
